Update about sensitive spam filter

Dear Online Community users,

Our It team have been working hard to resolve the issue with our oversensitive spam filter, whilst they are still working with our technical partners to resolve the problem. We have identified triggers that are sending your posts into moderation queue. The triggers that have been identified are if you post includes:
  • more than 10 repeated phrases - a "phrase" can be any sequence of characters, including common text patterns. For example, repeatedly using the same greeting, sign-off, or tagline throughout a post can trigger the filter. Varying your language slightly can help prevent this.
  • Untrusted URL (this does not include links to the Online Community or the NAS website).
  • Over 10 URLs.

Please do continue to report any technical issues to the CommunityManager@nas.org.uk and the Moderation Team will get back to you.

We hope that this is helpful whilst posting in the future.

Kind regards,
The Moderation Team

  • Thanks Rosie,

Do you mean in a thread, rather than post? I don't think anyone has put 5 URLs and 10 repeated phrases in a single post.

For example, if I type "The Moderation Team" here, does that count as one phrase or two phrases (added to your own sign off)?

  • if I type "The Moderation Team" here, does that count as one phrase or two phrases (added to your own sign off)?

One phrase, as each comment is judged by the spam filter individually.  It doesn't tot-up (you'd presume)

You can't be penalised for previous comments containing same wording on the same thread, even by antiquated software, surely.

  • What I'm trying to get to the bottom of is why a seemingly impossible set of trigger shown in Rosie's post are being set off. So, if someone types "autistic" and the previous post in the thread are counted too, is this why people are getting put into moderation left right and centre.

  • So, if someone types "autistic"

I'd not think "autistic" is counted as a phrase.  But if you kept saying "Welcome to the forum" as some do, in some posts, it could be, for instance.  Or continually re-quoting the same as others have quoted, possibly.

Perhaps it would be safer to lay-off quotes and links, as the infernal system clearly has an issue with repetition and URLs right now?
