Preparing before going out

Hi. I noticed I prepare before I go out whether it's by foot or car. If I'm going far I look at maps, check google maps, make sure I have a first aid kit, spare food and drinks, spare phone charger... I like to always be prepared whenever I know I'm going somewhere. In my car I have spares and supply kits. I don't drive much but when I do, I like to try to be as prepared as possible. I suffer from anxiety and preparing early on makes things easier for me. I was the same at school, always prepared for the day ahead. If I can't prepare or the plan changes from what I intended I get super stressed and have a meltdown.

Is it just me like this or is this an autism related thing?

  • My Nana rarely went anywhere, apart from shopping and her daily business, I wonder if it was a war time thing?

  • If I'm going somewhere I've never been before I'll look up the directions and bus numbers and times. I usually have tissues and a plaster or two in my handbag (as well as keys, phone & cards of course) and I'll either have a snack before I go or take one with me. And I always visit the bathroom before going anywhere.

When I was working, my work bag had lunch, snacks, tissues, plasters, immodium, paracetamol, a pen, and a nail file (emery board type) in it. I also kept spare trousers, socks & shoes at work in case I got wet in the rain walking to work, so I could change into dry clothes.

So yes, I'm always pretty prepared. Is it linked to autism? No idea I'm afraid!

  • Sounds like she was always prepared no matter what. I imagine that's what I will be like when I'm older, probably still forgetting half of it at the same time though!

  • My Nan was similar, I don't think she was ASC though, but she always had plasters, asprin, indigestion tablets and whatever the equivalent of immodium was back then, spare hankerchiefs and that was just what was in her normal handbag, if going away for a day, you could add a needle and thread, half a dozen clothes pegs and a long piece of string and I don't know what else, but it filled up a shopping bag!

  • I'm the same with my phone. I've even looked for it when I've been holding it lol. Thanks it's nice to be here.

  • Thats funny about the phone thing...doesnt matter what I seem to do and how organised I am, I always somehow leave it...grrrrr. No amount of telling myself off seems to work! Good to have you here btw

  • Hi. Yes I'm new here, I wanted to join as I'm the only aspie in my household and it can be a bit of a lonely and confusing place for me sometimes. I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes to be prepared! I prepare for everything I can, cooking can be fun but I try to prepare so much all at once it can be a bit overwhelming. I try and slow down so it doesn't get too much. I forget my phone a lot! I use it so much yet it's one of the things I forget to pick up most.

I was diagnosed young (5 years old), and I've read that routines and rituals are a big part of autism for a lot of ND people. I think it's more natural for us to develop routines and try and stick to them, if possible.

  • Hi phantomG, not sure if you are new around here, so just in case welcome to the forums. I am perhaps not at your level but I too like to be prepared in respect of any task really. From going out somewhere to cooking. I always make sure I have got everything I need and have a prepared rucksack for going out which makes things easier. I somehow always seem to forget my phone mainly...realise this and then have to go back for it Frowning Some of these things, preparations I guess are routines/rituals that I have. So yes and can definitely relate to what you are talking about but not sure how it fits with autism.
