Preparing before going out

Hi. I noticed I prepare before I go out whether it's by foot or car. If I'm going far I look at maps, check google maps, make sure I have a first aid kit, spare food and drinks, spare phone charger... I like to always be prepared whenever I know I'm going somewhere. In my car I have spares and supply kits. I don't drive much but when I do, I like to try to be as prepared as possible. I suffer from anxiety and preparing early on makes things easier for me. I was the same at school, always prepared for the day ahead. If I can't prepare or the plan changes from what I intended I get super stressed and have a meltdown.

Is it just me like this or is this an autism related thing?

  • Hi phantomG, not sure if you are new around here, so just in case welcome to the forums. I am perhaps not at your level but I too like to be prepared in respect of any task really. From going out somewhere to cooking. I always make sure I have got everything I need and have a prepared rucksack for going out which makes things easier. I somehow always seem to forget my phone mainly...realise this and then have to go back for it Frowning Some of these things, preparations I guess are routines/rituals that I have. So yes and can definitely relate to what you are talking about but not sure how it fits with autism.

  • Hi. Yes I'm new here, I wanted to join as I'm the only aspie in my household and it can be a bit of a lonely and confusing place for me sometimes. I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes to be prepared! I prepare for everything I can, cooking can be fun but I try to prepare so much all at once it can be a bit overwhelming. I try and slow down so it doesn't get too much. I forget my phone a lot! I use it so much yet it's one of the things I forget to pick up most.

I was diagnosed young (5 years old), and I've read that routines and rituals are a big part of autism for a lot of ND people. I think it's more natural for us to develop routines and try and stick to them, if possible.

  • Thats funny about the phone thing...doesnt matter what I seem to do and how organised I am, I always somehow leave it...grrrrr. No amount of telling myself off seems to work! Good to have you here btw
