I am 44 years old and have been diagnosed with Autism for about a year. During a chat with a CBT therapist I advised that I really struggled with reading as find it uncomfortable but don't understand why. I understand words and can read, it just feels like I'm wading through treacle when Im doing it.
The therapist asked if I had ever been assessed for Dyslexia as it might be the cause of my struggle with reading. I think Dyslexia and Autism are comorbidities.
I have asked my doctors to refer me for an assessment for Dyslexia but they advised me that they do not diagnose adults, which is frustrating. Aparently I need to get assessed privately which I fear would be expensive. I also do not know if or how a diagnosis will affect or help me in relation to my Autism.
Does anyone have any experience or input of Autism with Dyslexia (including getting diagnosed as an adult)?

It might be worth contacting the British Dyslexia Association for more advice about getting assessed.
I also see on their website that "From time to time, and subject to available funding, the British Dyslexia Association can offer bursaries to individuals to support them with the cost of accessing diagnostic assessments"
