Reasonable adjustments at sports competitions

Does anyone have any experience of taking part in sports competitions and any adjustments that they can make to help with anxiety on the day?

I have recently started Brazilian jiu-jitsu and I'm looking at taking part in a competition in November. I've competed previously in kickboxing, but that was with a whole team, whereas this time I'll essentially be "flying solo". I know I'll get incredibly anxious on the day and I don't want to miss any of my timings.

Does anyone have any suggestions for things I could request from the organisers in advance to make the day easier for me?

  • It's awesome that you're diving into Brazilian jiu-jitsu and gearing up for a competition! Dealing with anxiety on competition day can be tough, but you're not alone. One suggestion might be reaching out to the organizers in advance to discuss any accommodations that could help ease your nerves.

  • Competing solo can definitely amp up the anxiety, but trust me, you've got this. When I was prepping for a solo tournament in pickleball, I reached out to the organizers in advance. They were super accommodating, allowing me to schedule my matches with enough time in between to manage nerves. You could also request a quiet space to chill before your bouts, or even ask for a practice area. Remember, it's all about finding your groove. And if you need some pointers, the guide at https://anypickleball.com/guide is a great resource.

  • Thanks Zengarden. As it turns out, my coach signed up today as well so I will have someone else with me.

  • I used to do mainly 5km races and came in the top 20 of my age category. Before the event usually get really nervous and ending up listening to a podcast for visualization for a running event.

Maybe ask the organisers what time is your "fight"? Advice don't have any caffeine.
