Monotropism Questionnaire

Hello fellow autistic people!

I have just found this brilliant monotropism questionnaire created by Fergus Murray (autistic monotropism expert). It is so much more relatable and meaningful than any other questionnaire related to autistic experience. I have completed it and I scored very highly- 197/235 meaning I am more monotropic than 55% of autistic people and 96% of allistic people. This is a test of how monotropic you are and is part of a wider project about monotropism and autistic people. It is not a questionnaire to identify whether you are autistic or not.

I hope you find this interesting! How did you score on the Monotropism Questionnaire?

  • Monotropism Score: 214 / 235

    Average: 4.55

This score means that you are more Monotropic than about 88% of autistic people and about 100% of allistic people.

    I am Authismus Maximus

  • 189, more monotropic than 36% of autistic and 93% of allistic people.

I could never understand how people at school could get good marks at lots of different subjects. I tended to be top of the top set in subjects I enjoyed, and no better than mediocre, if not abysmal, at subjects that did not interest me.

  • Cool, you are very monotropic!

  • Literally, from the Greek for 'Single manner', or 'One way of doing things'.

  • Monotropism is a theory about autistic experience created by autistic people which suggests that we tend to focus on a few attention tunnels very intensely, meaning we forget about anything else outside our current attention tunnels. This explains lots of autistic experiences including our sensory experiences.

More information can be found below:

    Monotropism:

A theory which describes how autistic people use attention and interests. We have an interest based nervous system. Autistic people are monotropic- we focus our attention more intensely on a few or a singular interests, leaving little processing resources for anything outside of our current interests/attention tunnel.

    Monotropism

Monotropism is a theory developed by autistic people that describes our neurology and the way we use our attention. Typically autistic people are monotropic and this means we tend to use our processing resources and attention much more intensely on a single or a few interests. This means we can become specialists on anything that captures our attention.

Monotropism is the reason why we can hyper focus and our interests are more meaningful to us.

Alternatively, neurotypical people are polytropic this means they can spread their attention across multiple tunnels with much less depth.

  • Monotropism Score: 201 / 235

This score means that you are more Monotropic than about 65% of autistic people and about 98% of allistic people.

It feels weird because I wouldn't say I particularly identify with what I've heard before about monotropism. Like a lot of my score probably comes from how I try to deal with anxiety rather than really having that overwhelming natural tunnel vision that other people talk about.

  • Neither could I, I enjoyed sixth form education much more than school because I could hyper focus on one or two subjects and specialise.

I think monotropism is also the reason why degree level education appeals to us because it is a chance for us to become specialists in our dedicated interests.

What were your favourite subjects at school?

  • "Monotropism Score: 197 / 235

    Average: 4.19

This score means that you are more Monotropic than about 55% of autistic people and about 96% of allistic people."

    Conclusive!

  • More than 100% - your monotropism is so off the charts it has warped the structure of reality!

  • Monotropism Score: 211 / 235

    Average: 4.49

This score means that you are more Monotropic than about 84% of autistic people and about 99% of allistic people.

  • Biology, physics, art, history and Eng. lit., rather a mixed bag of subjects.

  • I got 205, average 4.-, 73% over other autists and 9-% over NTs

  • I answered a number of questions with 'neutral', because I did what the question asked about, but not for the reason given. Also, though I get fixated on things, other people do not 'tell me' that I do (because I can gauge other people's limits), and, though I have loops of thought, I do not get 'stuck' in them because I force myself to move out from them. Ironically, I have scored lower than perhaps I should have, due to an autistic desire for exactitude and absolute truth. Ha!

  • Yes they are rather mixed! Did you go to university?

  • Ironically, I have scored lower than perhaps I should have, due to an autistic desire for exactitude and absolute truth. Ha!

Funny! This test is very much of measure of monotropism as well as autistic experience, sadly you don’t score higher for autistic honesty!

I am surprised that the original author of this questionnaire autistic monotropism expert Fergus Murray didn’t spot how some of us in the autistic community could answer the questions in the same way you have. Maybe he was being very monotropic about researching monotropism?!

Also, though I get fixated on things, other people do not 'tell me' that I do (because I can gauge other people's limits), and, though I have loops of thought, I do not get 'stuck' in them because I force myself to move out from them

I understand what you mean, this is a brilliant example of an autistic literal interpretation! You maybe could have answered the question differently because it seems that you do get stuck in thought loops, you are just aware of them and know what to do about them. This means you are a very self aware autistic person.

  • It’s often quite natural for autistic people to hyper focus when anxious. Very understandable, I often hyper focus more when stressed/anxious. Does it help with your anxiety?

Like a lot of my score probably comes from how I try to deal with anxiety rather than really having that overwhelming natural tunnel vision that other people talk about.

Everyone in this autistic community is different, it’s ok if you don’t relate to monotropism.
