Monotropism Questionnaire

Hello fellow autistic people!

I have just found this brilliant monotropism questionnaire created by Fergus Murray (autistic monotropism expert). It is so much more relatable and meaningful than any other questionnaire related to autistic experience. I have completed it and I scored very highly- 197/235 meaning I am more monotropic than 55% of autistic people and 96% of allistic people. This is a test of how monotropic you are and is part of a wider project about monotropism and autistic people. It is not a questionnaire to identify whether you are autistic or not.

I hope you find this interesting! How did you score on the Monotropism Questionnaire?

  • that was my score exactly!  ;)

  • You are very welcome! It’s great that you have learnt a lot about how you use attention. You may have heard about being monotropic in terms of hyper focus which is at the core of our autistic cognition.

  • I am so glad that the theory of monotropism resonates with you so much. This is why autistic discovery is so important as you deserve to know who you are and why you think the way the way you do.

Self understanding is enlightening! If you want to know more about monotropism, here is a brilliant website:

  • Thanks for sharing, this is the first I’ve heard of monotropism and found it interesting. Don’t think I realised it’s something I struggle with until this moment lol.

    Monotropism Score: 207 / 235

    Your Average: 4.40

This score suggests that you are more Monotropic than about 77% of autistic people and about 99% of allistic people based on data from the initial validation study.

  • I was in the Lahaina Maui fire and I lost everything. House burned with everything in it. I have not been on the forums much since then. I am rudderless.

  • This has just blown my mind.. the questions felt like they were wrote for me. Nearly made me cry. Score 214/235 Average of 4.65.

  • I got 229/235. That's more than 99% of autistics and 100% more than allistics.

  •  Monotropism Score: 213/235

    Average: 4.53

99% of allistic people and 87% of autistic people

  • oh yes it is a lifeline and a way of communicating and expressing myself. thanks for asking. I also enjoy music (listening)  I am learning to write stories, now. it's a brave new world! I am deliciously terrified, feeling flappy! I want to write Sci Fi. Do you have a focus you feel drawn to?

  • Monotropism Score: 216 / 235

    Average: 4.60

This score means that you are more Monotropic than about 91% of autistic people and about 100% of allistic people.

I kind of found some of the questions to be a little off but overall i thought it was pretty well written.

  • You are very welcome!

  • Cool! Do you still enjoy it?

  • Hello. It’s good that finding out about monotropism has helped you understand your autistic experience.

I'm still learning what ASD means to me, and it's been difficult trying to access resources as someone who was diagnosed as an adult

This is a common experience for many of us, but there are brilliant autistic led resources (majority online, however there are some brilliant autistic authored books) such as Aucademy that I have posted for you below:

The best way to learn about your autistic profile is by being part of the autistic community, we can learn so much from each other. I hope you gain a sense of belonging and identity from being part of this community.

We are here for you! I hope these resources help you.

Good luck on your autistic discovery journey! Smile

  • It's nice knowing why I might be a certain way, and I'm still trying to learn about what ASD means to me :)

Exactly! It’s so important to learn more about your autistic neurology.

  • You are very welcome!

Part of the way I have learned to mask is to force myself to deal with many things and multitask but I much prefer giving my focus fully to one thing at a time.

Do you mean you have forced yourself to appear polytropic?

This often leads to autistic burnout because of what autistic advocate Tanya Adkin describes as monotropic split. The world is not really designed for autistic monotropic neurology because we are often expected to cope with multiple demands for our attention at once when actually it is much more meaningful and natural for us to hyper focus.

    Monotropic split article:

I much prefer to hyper focus too, particularly on the topics of autistic experience, our autistic culture and neurodiversity. I love it!

What do you like to hyper focus? What are your dedicated interests?

I hadn't realised I had many traits of monotropism, but the more I look into it the more it fits. It's nice knowing why I might be a certain way, and I'm still trying to learn about what ASD means to me :)
