Waiting list

I’ve just been put on referral list for autism, my gp said it could take about 2 years to even be seen. Does anyone have any helping tips or advice to help myself and my partner(to help me) get through this process with difficult times while I’m waiting

  • That sounds about right. Are there any autistic-led peer support groups near you? They typically don't require you to have a diagnosis.

  • The GP should be able to contact relevant service and people for you.

My wait was just over 2 years. GP managed to speed it up for me.

  • Unfortunately gp was the one who said it be 2 year wait

  • No only have a specialist who helps me in the emotional and difficulties service until the 15th of may

  • 2 years, wow my wait was 4 and a half years. If you can afford to, go private. In the meantime research autism and start your journey of self discovery, it's a long but rewarding journey. You could also see if your GP can speed things up for you.

  • 2 years? Oh my gosh I have just been referred but didn’t ask the waiting list. I would read up about Autism especially in Woman and note down what applies to you. Think of what you think would be helpful and then talk it through with your partner. Do you have a psychiatrist at all? If so you could as for a referral for some autism based therapy whilst waiting for a diagnosis. 2 years is a long time but I have found reading about it and identifying my triggers and needs have opened discussion between me and those around me and has helped me so much :)

  • Research, research, research.

Learn as much as you can from the Internet and books written by autistic authors.  Information aids understanding and acceptance.

It also helped me to write down how I felt my research applied to me.  My traits and eexperiences as a child and adult.  It's how I often process my emotions.
