Thank you Peter. That was a very welcome mini-break and massive dose of nostalgia for me. I enjoyed watching House very much - thank you for taking the time to post the clip. Kind regards.
Nice! Are you watching one rn/recently?
I watch a lot of K-Drama's too. I loved those two.
Ah so it must have been a fan theory. That happens quite a bit with TV and movies.
It was specifically addressed. There is an episode where he treats a boy with autism and his team are like, does house have autism, and they’re like ‘no he’s just an ***.’
i found the clip https://youtu.be/BBe7I88Anlw
I don't recall exactly, but I certainly read claims at the time that he had Asperger's, it was the lens through which I viewed the series many years before I self diagnosed and was probably the first I'd even heard of Asperger's, so it certainly influenced how people understood the condition when it came out.
true and the good doctor was based on a k drama too. but alas it doesn't seem to be catching on in the west.
Actually I have found autistic representation to be in some ways better from K-dramas.
It's Okay to Not be Okay, and Extraordinary Atourney Woo, are 2 that immediately spring to mind.
I know some people do not like using subtitles but as I struggle to process voices anyway I found using subtitles opens up a lot of non-english media to me.
I watched it again last night. It's many years since I originally watched it. The release date was 1988 I believe.
I found it quite cringeworthy in places. The meltdowns were portrayed more like tantrums and stopped abruptly when the situation changed
Several times during the film rain man was described as high functioning. I supposed that was how he would have been viewed then, but is a clear example of how meaningless functioning labels are.
It was such a sad ending when he was deemed unable to make his own decisions and sent back to live in the institution. They had no understanding that to ask an autistic person something verbally and expect them to be able to communicate a decision straight away is unreasonable. He was clearly overwhelmed at that meeting. Unfortunately many people still fail to understand that today.
I watched it a few months ago, obviously before the film no one had even heard of autism, it put autism on the map, unfortunately Hollywood takes it to the extreme, boring films don’t sell tickets. It’s thought there are about 3 savant people like the character in the world, it’s not a fair representation of autistic people but as I said, there was nothing before. Unfortunately the world now thinks all autistic people can do party tricks.
Ok so here’s a thing. We have representation of autistic people with intellectual disability in media, rain man for example. I struggle to think of any at the opposite end of the spectrum, autistic but extremely intelligent.
we have lots of people who might be said to have autistic traits, sheldon cooper, Sherlock Holmes etc. but they are never called autistic. Why is the media afraid to label high functioning autistic characters as autistic?
Are they worried about offending us? How is it alright to offend low functioning autistic people then? How is portraying us poorly less offensive than erasing us?
