I consider myself to be a none conformist & have been so all of my life.
Although a none conformist has to conform at times within life.
I seem to be mellowing a little on this subject, as I'm getting older.

quietly subversive
That is how I used to describe my teenage years, not the typical rebellion, but certainly quietly subversive.
Both, depending entirely on circumstances.I have always, to the best of my ability, conformed to the law, where it makes sense, but I am quietly subversive of any authority figure or organisation I do not respect. I have never conformed to fads, trends or fashions, however, I try to conform to the expectations of friends and family, again, as far as I am able.
It depends how logical and reasonable the rule / norm is, and what the implications for not following it are.
Now I see myself as a thwarted idealist.
What a fantastic phrase !
I used to think that I was a non conformist and, at heart, I still am. However, I did have to conform sufficiently to pay my mortgage and other bills.
Now I see myself as a thwarted idealist.
Non-conformist definitely. According to both dictionary definitions, the other being "any English Protestant who does not conform to the doctrines or practices of the established Church of England"!
I have always been pretty immune to peer pressure. Although somewhat less immune when the peer group in question is not just the other kids in school or whatever but actually of people I genuinely respect and like and do perceive as my peers. I can be persuaded to do something I kind of want to do but have reservations about, but not something I have zero desire to do.
As for authority and following other people's rules, only if they make sense. If they don't make sense but don't cause a problem I can go along with them. But if they don't make sense and cause a problem to me or others then I will try to reasonably change the situation and if that fails then it has the potential to get messy as I can be stubborn.
I just thought it would be an interesting debate
I've always struggled with social norms, not with regards to me participating within anti social behaviour, more conforming generally. Maybe it's because we can see things differently, but I'm not totally sure.
As was pointed conforming and doing something because it's a good thing to do can be the same thing.
So I go against the grain with things like small-talk and lying, but I'm kind to people especially elderly and children as they deserve more respect. The same goes with emergency services employees, A&E, police, firefighters, we owe them respect.
My neck was always stiff, and I hope it'll remain so, I wasn't born to be a kneeler.
