Scared of the news

All this talk of nuclear war is terryfying me. Because of my processing issues I struggle to understand it all. Is it actually going to happen?
I dont think I could cope with that at all ,be too much for me

Going through so much in my own life at the moment and hearing all this is too much

  • I switched to only reading news on the website Positive News. I then subscribed to the 4x a year magazine.

    Best thing I ever did

  • I don't watch the news

Never look it up either. All they talk about is horrible stuff which no one wants to hear

  • I do all news - from everywhere - alternative and mainstream - documentaries - lectures - the key to understanding is knowing which filter should be used from each source.   I love the name change by the way.

  • 6 months later lol, but hey, I've just joined.

Current affairs or Geo Politics is something that I spend far too much time on.  I have done for far too many years & I should allow myself a break, not that easy these days with what's occurring around the world.

One thing I will add : I don't do main stream news & I have no TV or radio.

  • There is something addictive about the news. Like many other things moderation is a good thing to aim for.

  • You are so right, 3 times per day is quite enough news for anyone...but I am guiltier than most for over-indulging on current affairs.  I have been making a concious effort to cut down.

  • Thank you that is very comforting. I try to live by that myself but its not easy

  • I think that's a big part of the problem. In the old days you had newspapers once a day and the news at 6pm and 10pm and that was it. Now you have rolling news channels 24 hours a day, live updates throughout the day on BBC and Sky websites and social media like Twitter. Its too much for anyone.

And as said, it is designed to sensationalise, as thats what gets clicks

  • This feels like living through the 70s and 80s when we spent years living in fear of nuclear war. I learned then about how much the prospect is hyped... but also to accept that if it happens, there's a high probability that I won't live long enough to experience the awfulness of it.

  • Thank you Ivy, Im in the same boat so will try and do the same thing

  • Hey Billy,

Sorry to hear your feeling like this. Understandably though this last couple years have been horrible and the news has been all over it. They always add drama in the news and make it out to scare people I try to avoid it if I can it just induces my anxiety and causes more stress and trigger my IBS.

Try to avoid it for now no point in upsetting yourself.

  • A thought came to me which I looked up. Matthew 6 34. I think it is because I have spent so much time recently worrying about what might happen that I have had to tell myself to concentrate on today where possible as the news often makes things feel worse.

  • I can relate to this Mimi - I feel very much the same. I like to stay informed too and was a bit of a news junkie for many years but over the last 2 or 3 years I’ve realised that i5 was quite damaging for my mental health to have this constant diet of concerning news stories. It’s a matter of finding the right balance and very personal in terms of how resilient I feel. At the moment I definitely haven’t got much resilience and I need to take care of myself by not absorbing all the very concerning news stories that have happened over th3 last couple of years or so. The mind is a bit like a sponge - and at the moment I don’t feel I can remain detached enough from what I see on the news to keep it from negatively impacting on my mental health. When I was young the news was only on twice a day - now it’s 24 hours a day - I think once a day is probably enough for me at the moment!

  • I am so sorry you are struggling with this. The last few years have truly had some terrifying world events, many of which have been capitalised by those in the news media.

Everything about the format of the news is designed to be dramatic and scary. Whether it's the wording of a headline or the music on the News at 10, it is engineered to induce fear, because fear sells. So there is no incentive for broadcasting companies to give stories an unbiased or balanced view. A rational headline is less likely to get you to click a link or buy a news paper and good news tends to only be reported as an 'and finally' segment on TV.  News broadcasters, be they print, TV, radio or online, are in the business of making money, just like any other business.

That said, the news this year has started to scare me so much I try not to watch it anymore. I was getting so upset by it, it was making me ill. I feel really guilty about that, because I've always believed we should stay informed. But the best I can do is to ask my husband if there's anything on the news I should know, and I only ask him in the morning because even the most balanced report of bad news will make my anxiety terrible and that always feels worse at night.

I wish I could offer you more reassurance.

  • Distressing - not ‘de stressing’ ! Joy
The ‘de stressing’ would be fine!

  • It’s highly highly highly unlikely! Hugely flawed and terrible as it is that nations possess these appalling weapons it is also the case that they do - to a large degree - work as a deterrent to any one nation actually launching them.

I recommend strongly that you limit your intake if News media. It’s very toxic to mental well being and if it’s de stressing to you I suggest you severely cut down your exposure to News of this kind.

  • I've spent a LOT of my life being scared of one thing or another including nuclear war.

(I'm bloody ANGRY about nuclear war, when we protested it no-one gave a tools until times like NOW when it hangs over us like a dark shadow. It's OUR leaders having the power to kill us all on a whim, and they remind us of it every time we get a bit "complainy2 like e all are now after that covid tomfoolery, and the other many insults and ijuries OUR LEADERS keep heaping upon us).

KNOWLEDGE of a thing that frightens you reduces it's power over you.

In the case of even the lowest level of attack by the Russian side I KNOW I live just inside the fireball area of an 800Kt thermonuclear weapon.that will be delivered (under their doctrine) to my local airfield. I can't prevent that attack, (except by inciting people to rebel against the idea of "government by fear") and disentangle their lives from government and money as far as possible, thus starving the beast of YOUR input.

Don't bloody vote, it's obviously pointless, and the registration process makes you an easy target for various parasites. At least then it's YOU making your life hard, as you try to form a functioning self sufficient solid trusting family unit, of the sort that got us though hard times in times gone by, and which they DON'T want you to do any more...

It's way past time we stopped expecting someone else to make our lives work for us, and took control ourselves. But that is infinitely easier when there is a strong culture that we all live in, and we aren't allowed to have that at any price.

I'll stop here, I think I may be violating the politics rule. I'm just so incenses with the gulf between how things really work in our world and how most people have been told that they work. Nuclear war and access to "state benefits" are two of my biggest triggers and I've seen them both here today!

  • I like history too Romans are my favourite and Victorian times. Egyptian history is interesting as well. I don't know a lot about sport though lol.

  • Thats true. Thats how they get clicks and stuff I guess.

Sport and  history are my two favourite topics btw. I love history cos its all already happend so theres nothing scary or unpredictable about it. And sport is just my escape from the rest of the world

  • I'm glad it does. Even if it's a little.

If you want to look try to access a certain page or topic like sport or history, that will probably be fine. Just remember if you do see anything to do with war they probably making it worse than it is. X
