Noise reducing ear plugs

Has anyone used the flare calmer ear plugs? I find lots of sounds at once difficult which is a challenge when out and about! I've been looking at different earplugs and want something discreet. I've tried the standard earplugs you get from pharmacies, but I find these a bit disorienting as they block out too much noise or the wrong sounds.

I've found the flare calmer ones that have good reviews, but I want to see what people who are actually autistic think or them before I buy them as they're a little pricey if they end up not being suitable.

Any reviews of these or other ear plugs welcome!

  • Ive just ordered a pair of flare calmer, hope they work

  • I find earplugs uncomfortable to sleep in, especially if I roll onto my side. I went for full closed-back and Sony WH-1000XM4. You can take the audio cable out so they are more like ear muffs and the noise cancelling lasts about 12-16 hours after a full charge (which takes a couple of hours). The noise cancelling itself is exceptional but, like with all such technology, it does better at lower frequencies than higher ones. The kids upstairs can be playing basketball, slamming doors, and slamming each other down in a wrestling match and I hear nothing. I have to take the headphones off just to check if they're still being noisy. If a police car goes past with the siren at full belt, though, I can just about make it out.

  • I’ve never used them to be fair, but now It seems like I may be in need of a pair due to living with some noisy roommates (I’m a super light sleeper).

I’ve always been wary of them to be honest, are they safe? Any potential side effects ? Would you guys recommend over the top ear plugs or the latter ?

  • I've tried the flare isolate but the smallest size is much too big for my ear and leaves it feeling swollen, blocked and painful for a couple of days after I wear them.

I've been put off the calmers by the ads saying they don't block voices, which is the main thing I want to block.

I've tried various earplugs over the decades and nothing works as well as blutack molded to completely covers the ear hole and surrounding area. I've worn it to sleep every night since 2005 and sometimes wear it during the day if I need to focus.

The other thing that helps is earphones with calming music playing to block out background sounds.

  • Ive never heard of flare ones. they sound good but not sure how they work. I will read the review

  • You are very welcome. This forum is a very useful place for seeking advice about different products used by our autistic community.

  • Thank you! That's really helpful

  • Hello Emily

I don’t know about the flare ear plugs, so hopefully other autistic people will be able to offer their reviews. However, I have seen adverts for Loop ear plugs and they are apparently really good.

I have just seen this article- a review of the Flare Calmer earplugs by an autistic adult. She writes about how this helps her regulate her sensory experience.

    I hope this helps.
