Medicine Advice

Hello and good morning everyone!

I have recently been diagnosed with ASD at age 35, my Asd and a couple of big life events have caused me to fall in to a spell of Major Chronic depression and huge anxiety issues and I am looking for some help and advice about the medication I take for these problems.

I currently take 45mg of Mirtazapine for these issues as well as ad hoc Propranolol for when the anxiety hits hard but neither really do all that much to help. I still have situations I have to avoid and have many occasions where I can't function my hands start shaking, heart starts beating super fast, sweat pours and I can barely even speak and it's severely impacting my work and personal life which in turn makes my mood plummet.

Each time I try to speak with my GP about this he suggests I try another SSRI almost throwing pills at me at random until I find one that helps, but having tried escitalopram, sertaline, mirtazapine, propranol and finding little if any improvement, significant side effects, (weight gain, sexual, worsening of depression) I do not want to continue like this.

What medications do you take?

What helps best with mood in your experience?

What helps best with anxiety in your experience?

Is there anywhere, psychological Asd specialists that can help me make a proper medication plan?

  • If you want to make a medication plan, then you don't need a psychologist.  You need a psychiatrist.  They can prescribe what you need and will understand better what you need.

As for me, the only meds I have for ASD related issues, is Valium/Diazepam.  I use it seldom if at all possible.  It does chill me out a bit.  I don't use anti-depressants at all because my body won't tolerate them.  I sometimes have St Johns Wort for a couple of days to balance my brain chemistry when it gets out of shape, but it isn't useful after 2-3 days.  Don't use St Johns Wort and SSRIs together, it causes Serotonin Syndrome which is highly unpleasant and can kill you.

If you want better mood, find hard exercise.  Weight lifting, running, trekking and anything that leaves you wanting to sleep after exercising will do.

If you can find a trial using psilocybin based drugs, that might be a good bet.

  • I refuse point blank to take any. I know some folk say they are helpful and I make no judgement either way. Each must make their own decision.

However, you may want to research meds and autism. There is quite a bit out there to suggest that they may not interact with our neurologies the same way as for other people. We may not benefit. Truth is I don't think anyone truely knows what meds are appropriate in ASD. I think they try what they think is right for neurotypicals and hope for the best.

  • Basically Serotonin reuptake inhibitors are considered first line drugs. GPs are kind of hesitant to prescribe 2nd line drugs but based on people I know if the 1st 2 or 3 SSRI drugs haven’t worked for you SSRI drugs may not work for you at all. They all share the same basic mechanism after all.

  • SSRIs don't work for me. Half-pill dose of paroxetine made me feel drunk, extremely nauseous (couldn't sleep more than 2-3 minutes at a time all night before urge to vomit would wake me) and had extreme abdominal pain. I lost weight due to not being able to eat and I was already very underweight. GPs won't offer anything else so I don't take anything, except etizolam (bought when it was still legal) for major life events such as moving home.

  • Unfortunately, I don't remember what you mean. There are a lot of online pharmacies nowadays. However, it isn't easy to find a suitable one. Unfortunately, many deceive their customers and do not provide high-quality services. I have a problem with immunity. I hope you will be able to find a way out.

  • Thanks for the reply Sam, appreciated. I have regular exercise in spades as I teach and train in martial arts which I have done for more than 10 years. I never had anxiety issues with teaching a class of 25 or more, at work or anything like,  untill I had a couple of big life events which would suggest it's not necessarily the ASD that's to blame. My main intention behind the post was if possible to find some kind of medical professional I could discuss this with that's not my GP as he has little knowledge on any anything mental health, and really isn't much help and I don't have the wealth to seek a private Dr......

  • Firstly I just want to make clear I am not an expert so my reply will just be a matter of opinion.

When I was prescribed sertraline and propranolol (pre- ASD diagnosis) I recall my GP saying that the medication will assist mood but it wont change the way I think or recieve information.

To me, the root cause of my anxieties and depression is Autism. I can't change the fact that I am Autistic. How I recieve/process information and my thinking patterns lead to these things. The medication is somewhat an attempt to counterbalance the chemicals.

To try and add something positive to my reply, I found regular excercising quite beneficial, as it improves my mood, gives me a sense of achievement, routine, and acts as a distraction.

I was only recently diagnosed ASD myself so I would be interested to read what others have to say on it, even if they don't agree with me.

    Sam
