Medicine Advice

Hello and good morning everyone!

I have recently been diagnosed with ASD at age 35, my Asd and a couple of big life events have caused me to fall in to a spell of Major Chronic depression and huge anxiety issues and I am looking for some help and advice about the medication I take for these problems.

I currently take 45mg of Mirtazapine for these issues as well as ad hoc Propranolol for when the anxiety hits hard but neither really do all that much to help. I still have situations I have to avoid and have many occasions where I can't function my hands start shaking, heart starts beating super fast, sweat pours and I can barely even speak and it's severely impacting my work and personal life which in turn makes my mood plummet.

Each time I try to speak with my GP about this he suggests I try another SSRI almost throwing pills at me at random until I find one that helps, but having tried escitalopram, sertaline, mirtazapine, propranol and finding little if any improvement, significant side effects, (weight gain, sexual, worsening of depression) I do not want to continue like this.

What medications do you take?

What helps best with mood in your experience?

What helps best with anxiety in your experience?

Is there anywhere, psychological Asd specialists that can help me make a proper medication plan?

  • If you want to make a medication plan, then you don't need a psychologist.  You need a psychiatrist.  They can prescribe what you need and will understand better what you need.

As for me, the only meds I have for ASD related issues, is Valium/Diazepam.  I use it seldom if at all possible.  It does chill me out a bit.  I don't use anti-depressants at all because my body won't tolerate them.  I sometimes have St Johns Wort for a couple of days to balance my brain chemistry when it gets out of shape, but it isn't useful after 2-3 days.  Don't use St Johns Wort and SSRIs together, it causes Serotonin Syndrome which is highly unpleasant and can kill you.

If you want better mood, find hard exercise.  Weight lifting, running, trekking and anything that leaves you wanting to sleep after exercising will do.

If you can find a trial using psilocybin based drugs, that might be a good bet.
