Public Transport

I can't travel on public transport. It makes me ill, in the gut. Does anyone else struggle with trains & buses etc? I find I have to really coach myself through taking them and I'm just a nervous mess every time. I went through a period of panic attacks on the train. The more crowded it is the worse I feel

  • I haven’t  used public transport in years bar one or two instances when I had no choice. It was trains and I have to use noise cancelling headphones and sit away from everybody (doorways etc). That was years ago. It’s car or stay at home but I try not to go too far unless I have a planned destination and return or someone that I trust with me. If that’s not possible it’s headphones out again.

  • The worst thing for me is physical contact with strangers, or the threat of such. I am quite happy touching and being touched by loved ones and close friends, but hate touching people I do not know.  There is also the over-use of perfumes, or certain types of perfume, which means I quite regularly get off buses at random stops, just to escape the overwhelming stench.

  • I hate buses in particular. I don't currently have a car and have had to use the bus. it stops almost outside my house and it goes on a journey to town that I have driven thousands of times. Yet I still have massive anxiety about getting the bus. I am always at the stop way too early and keep having to check the app etc. I guess its a control thing.

  • I find buses difficult as there's so little information about their timetables, routes and tickets - or rather there's plenty of it, but it's not reliable (e.g. timetable contradicts app contradicts info at bus stop). The price I get charged for the same journey is different every time. Maybe that's a local problem as there are three different companies serving the same routes here and they don't seem to communicate at all.

Trains are better. Trains also usually have toilets which is good if my guts aren't behaving themselves. Which if I'm anxious, they're probably not.

I've definitely had to practice taking public transport to get over the panic attacks. I still choose to walk instead if it's less than a few miles.

  • I do. Motion sickness whenever I travel by bus or car. It was a lot worse when I was a kid, Crowd makes it worse. Other means of transportations are safe for me, be that train, plane or boat.

I came up with a solution, following my radical tendencies :P If I fall asleep before I start getting nauseated, which is never later than 15min since departure, It won't happen.

I heard as well, that if you put a plug in one ear only it will stop it.
