ADOS 2 Done

Hi all, hope you're all keeping well.

Yesterday I had my ADOS 2 assessment, and it was not what I expected at all.  Personally I thought it was quite childish, exercises included shape sorting to make a pattern, telling a story using a book which featured flying frogs and very precise times.  Oh and telling a story with toys, lol!

The Dr told me I should get a result in about 2 weeks as they have to discuss it with an MDT.

All the best - Dan

  • From the (??!!) should I take it that you are either confused or excited by my username? aha.

In retrospect, I did a rather autistic thing during my interview - instead of thinking about the frogs and their motivations, I just started thinking about urban design and the features of the neighbourhood such as the white picket fences which suggested that it was American suburbia. Then, of course, I talked about the Halloween movies which are set in quiet American suburbia - a complete tangent of course. Makes me chuckle to think about this.

  • Hi Space Octopus (??!!), It is called Tuesday yes!!  The timings in it are very precise which I mentioned to the doctor but other than that I just said whatever I saw.  She asked me about the expressions on some of the frogs which I'd not noticed, telling me the one there was surprised and the other one there was angry for example.

The only AQ questionnaire I've done was the AQ10 right at the start of the process.  I love reading fiction and, yes, it mostly revolves around sci-fi.

  • Hi Catlover, I couldn't make up a story, I just told them what was there really.

Are you saying then that while she was writing her notes up I was still being observed by the other lady?  If so then oops!  I just sat there!!

Fingers crossed your report says what you want it to.

  • Hi Dan,

When I was assessed, I also had to read through the flying frogs book (I believe it's called 'Tuesday') as well as telling a story from some images. Many things in these diagnostic questionnaires and tools are just totally inaccurate. On the AQ50, for example, you are seen as 'less autistic' if you enjoy reading fiction. Not sure which genius thought of that but I suppose they haven't heard of things such as... science fiction and fantasy. To some degree I suppose it shows how the tools to clinically diagnose autistic adults aren't optimal and predicated on an incredibly simple understanding of autism.

  • I’m so glad my assessment wasn’t at all like that. I think I would have actually refused to make up a story or pretend to brush my teeth etc…

I know that the occupy yourself bit is to see if you start talking and making conversation while they are ‘busy’. It’s all about observation.
During mine, I didn’t even realise that I was being observed at the time Rolling eyes. Incidentally, I get my report in a few weeks. No idea what the outcome will be.

  • Hey Dan,

I had mine via zoom call which added to the awkwardness, I HATE being on camera! I find out tomorrow the outcome and then I’ll receive a full report in 2 weeks.

I am a bag of nerves today. The thought that they know something about me that I don’t yet is weirding me out if that makes any sense at all.

I think the child-like aspect is probably just the best way to gage imagination but don’t quote me on that. Just the whole conversation was really difficult, i struggled with back and forth conversation (like I do most people) but I think I was hyper aware of it because I knew they were watching me.

I hope you get the answers you need!

  • Hi Bex

I also found it mentally draining and quite childish really, the book and the toy tasks.  I did like you with the book and just described what I saw.

If I think about it, I also felt awkward doing the tasks.  There were only 2 people in there with me, the doctor and someone who was there to observe I think.

The doctor stopped me and put some paper and felt tip pens and other items in front of me and said just occupy yourself with these items while I catch up on some notes.  The room went silent for about 15 minutes or so.  When she was done we just carried on talking again.

It was quite a weird experience but it killed a couple of hours and got me out of the house for a bit.

  • Hi Dan!

I had my ADOS 2 yesterday also. I found the whole thing mentally draining and today I’m totally on edge, anxious, irritable etc.

i really struggled with the whole thing. The story telling part was a book with no words about a boy, a dragon and a castle. I was absolutely stumped. I ended up quite literally just describing what I could see on the page.

I found the whole thing really uncomfortable and awkward. How did you find it?
