Is depression part of Autism...

...or a result of insufficient treatment?

  • I took Amphetamine sulphate once back in the 1980's (Now branded as Adderal I believe) and it was a revelation. I felt completely normal and up to speed for once.

I never explored it again, because of the oft quoted side effects, (Induction of paranoid psychosis) yet if a doctor prescribes it there are apparently no side effects!

Always remember kids a PROFESSIONAL is another way of saying "Does it for the money" and the word is NOT an indication of special competence.

Whatever they might try and tell you.

  • Why do they medicate ADHD, anyway? If it's a neurological difference not a mental illness, shouldn't it be something to learn about and manage. Throwing meds at it sounds like controlling the individual rather than supporting the individual.

  • if Temple Grandinn says it then  its probably true

  • Sorry such a long answer.

  • Well 12 page assessment from November says yes(and assesor said same-recorded it! Lol),but says needs clarification on how it affects me. Then the clarification assessment happened, and when i got home(30ish miles away),i started getting annoyed with questions i felt directed a diagnosis ,and was a 12 minute chat on their thoughts. Alot of ADHD mentioned(same way GP's obsessed with MH diagnosis!),and they know i won't take meds for ADHD,cos whats in them, but i disagree anyway as Autism fits waaay back and explains my relationships for one thing. Probably be a cognitive test(think they said!),they waiting chat with psychologist and first assessor. When i questioned ADHD they said ADD-i still think isn't right.

  • But you've got a previous diagnosis of autism, right? How can general mental health undermine that? What planet are they on?

  • Intersting comments there.

GP's tend to put me on highest dose, and that's it. Last time someone precribed one before last Xmas, they said they'd check up on me to see how i get on. Not only they didn't,but also chemist never got next precription til 6 months later! Glad i decided to ride out Xmas without them instead.

I also do have auto immune Hypothyroidism which is treated badly on NHS,so have private prescriber and pay for meds NHS won't provide anymore.

  • Autistics are generally more susceptible to side effects from medication. I read a Temple Grandin article where she recommends if autistic people are going on antidepressants they should start on a third of the recommended dose and build up to the dose that works for them. GP's unfortunately don't know stuff like that. For example a lot of autistic folks have a faster resting heart rate and are more likely to have EDS and autoimmune conditions. This stuff needs to make it into mainstream medical training.

  • Think ur right. And after last assessment(a week ago)when they tried to say i don't have Autism, but probably have ADHD or something like Autism-i sent an email to them and think now that will be used to discharge me. Sent another one explaining diagnoses have alongside, but not sure they give me time of day now. Guarentee will just be the same old Personality Disorder traits fed back to GP again!

  • Yeah,i beginning to feel thats right. And as my experience of anti depressants causing me seizures, which last few yrs have nearly stopped(had alot since 18 yrs old,few before that),i won't try any kind. Especially as seen people made worse with them(addicted).

  • aye isnt that due to the fact that most autistics are generally asexual, which is under lgbt.

  • In the autistic community there are more LGBTQ people than there are in the general population. People in the LGBTQ community have lots of problems just like autistic people whether ND or NT.

  • It is a common comorbidity due to how autistics are treated by society. It is more common in those who are aware of being different which leads to feelings of isolation.

  • Yes. Absolutely.

But where is the MH service for ASC?

    Largely conspicuous by it's absence.

  • I don't think that any MH problem is inevitable. But it stands to reason that a lack of proper support and understanding for the experience of being autistic will lead to events and situations which are depressing or traumatic and ultimately cause MH problems.

These then only get worse if the right MH support isn't on offer. Stuffing people full of drugs doesn't help and therapies designed for NTs are ineffective or worse, make matters worse.

  • Who defines what is correct, any answer better than nothing.

  • GP's are obsessed with diagnosing depression, cos have contracts that drug companies pay them to prescribe anti depressants like sweets. Or coin the term 'anxiety and depression' to further prescribe meds i don't see anyone gain from. GP's also obsessed with prescribing Insulin, without doing proper evaluations.

  • It’s not a part of autism but I think it might affect us differently just because our perception is different and perhaps the way it’s treated in NT people vs ND people would need to be different

  • It will never happen. Every mental health day they just promote CAMS,nothing for adults apart from drugs to comply to be quiet.

  • Remember this guy i knew from a MH group, diagnosis of Schizophrenia after trying to take his own eye out(allegedly!),he had a life coach, and keeps banging on about how much meds he takes and obsessed with coffee having to be so(no instant!),yet has greasy fryups as much as poss. The substance abuse charities love him. As his brother is a dr and he bangs on about how much benefits he gets, think he just bangs on about how much meds he supposedly takes to fly thru medicals.
