Moderator rules on what is replied to..

Is anyone able to provide detail if the rules and threshold tests that NAS moderators abide by, or is it down to personal judgement.

I.e a post about a woman being raped is not responded to, or an adult who rarely gets visitors and is living in isolation, or posts relating to adult suicide. However other posts warrant intervention?

Curious ...

  • Thank you - I didn't know that Slight smile Definitely good to know.

  • Definitely! I’m the admin for my Facebook group for autistic women and you have to be on the ball. I had to turn off commenting on a post the other day because I feared that it may spiral into an argument if I did not take that action. You can’t just leave it and wait until multiple members are involved and much bad feeling is caused before stepping in to do something.

  • ...Hi, I just wanted to say that this is good advice, damned good, darned splendid, By George, Well said, Most Excellent, etc. etc...

...The only reason I Myself never think of suggesting EMailing upon this Forum is because I cannot do it and have never done it...!  I wonder if I shall *ever* remember (!) ...  Slight smile

(p.s. - Thanks for that reply, Mrs Fantastic Fox!)

  • You can email the mods at CommunityManager@nas.org.uk if you have concerns about the welfare of a forum user and wish to bring it to the attention of the moderators. I've done this several times previously.

  • I don't think this place is tolerant but lax! i remember some abuse being left up for days. I am a forum moderator for an electronics forum and I am appalled at the level of non moderation here. I and the site owner are not heavy handed but you need to know that mods will react in a timely way.

Between the poor response of moderators and the website here being so damn slow I started up ndsa.uk with other members from here. it will be moderated, it won't be politically correct but abuse will not be tolerated and certainly not be left up for days on end like i have seen here.

Corporate moderating is not going to work well. I like to work on a case by case basis with the basic guidelines of no abuse will be tolerated and for everything else we work on it case by case.

  • Political correctness often stifles useful discussion. If the information is abusive or obviously fake then it should certainly be removed, but we Aspies tend to focus on unusual subjects and have major distress, with little understanding elsewhere and our communication does not fir in to the "standard political correctness"

I have found other websites where the admin like to throw their weight about and block people, but this place seems very tolerant. I know I write a lot about adult suicide, but know that the standard "emergency response" is humiliating and unhelpful and is really about the admin people covering their backs from litigation and there is no evidence it saves lives. I had a county medical research role for many years and know that suicide in autism is a major problem that needs addressing and lived experience through this site maybe very useful

  • Good to hear from you DC. Keep posting, wonderful you x

  • "Click Reply under the message to which you want to respond. For a new topic, first search to check for an existing thread. To start one, choose the most relevant in our list of forums. Please make sure that you have read the rules."

...The RULES link is still there, after all. But NAS cannot force anyone to follow them and can only censor those whom they see as determined to not do so (Trolls & Spammers).

(...sorry about this, but I think I must sign off, now. Not even an hour... pfui... at least I got *one* post in for a week so far...)

  • Greetings, Miss-Mysterious-Dot (!)... I was not logging on today, but I see this, so I put something in to tide You over... (sort of) 'til NAS responds.

No slight intended, but Your Good Self not posting much here lately, may have made You forget how this Forum can be, and most of all how capricious (awful) the WWW/Internet is in general. For RULES, there is/was a link upon the Home Page (seems to have disappeared lately. NAS, please put it back, eh?)...

...Pretty much certain keywords - suicide, kill, any swear-words - will set off the Auto-Filter and a Moderator will look into it when they have the time; & this is how Threads are censored or deleted and is also how the likes of Yourself or Myself, or Trolls or spammers gain "points" or gain "anti-points" (something like that!) towards a "reputation" upon this Forum.

...With regards to Your last paragraph, what is responded to or even posted upon this forum is *not* down to NAS... it seems bad, but if a suicidal etc. person posts and they recieve no replies (apart from from NAS), then that is likely due to no-one else knowing what to do about their predicament.

...Also there is the fact that at certain times there is no NAS watching, at all, and this is how spam and trolls sometimes get through.

The only "main" advice I can suggest is what NAS Themselves have said at Me: Start a New Thread *with the problem IN THE TITLE OF THE THREAD*. ... This here Thread might turn out to be a good example; You have put the word "Moderator" in it, so that should get the attention of said person(s). It sounds too obvious when I point it out, but, well, We shall see, One supposes...? (Previous good Examples include the "Mods please make the spam stop" and "Trolls upon this forum" Threads.)

  • I've found this worrying too - I'd be interested to know what the rules/thresholds are. I'd also like there to be a way to bring a post to the moderators' attention, without reporting it as abusive. For example, if there was a 'Request moderator review' or 'Flag a concern' button, that'd be a good way to let the mods know there was somebody who needed help. I can't use the 'Report as abusive' button for someone who isn't being abusive, but I would like to be able to get the mods' attention if I spotted someone in need of urgent help (like with the rape/suicide posts you mentioned).
