Overwhelmed, Confused and Feeling very alone.

Hello, First off I just want to say hello to everyone am not really sure how to proceed now so Ill just lay it out.

I have been told am Autistic, but am still waiting for my letter from Hill House In birmingham that gose into more detail. I was told the basics and sent on my merry way. am a 40 yr old male and really I don't know what this means in my day to day life or what's going on to tell you the truth. Am more confused now than I was before I went. My CPN says I can't get help from them so I really dont know were to turn or to help myself am fealing VERY overwhelmed and confused. so I have a few questions if I may.

1. Were do  I go from here.

2. Is there help out there for me to help myself.

3. Is this normal fealing wise and experance wise.

  • There definitely isn't enough support out there for autistic people. It's not strange at all - it's hard when people don't understand you, especially if you feel you're going to be yelled at all the time.

Hopefully this forum will be a really helpful outlet for you. There are lots of people who understand here Slight smile

  • Just wanna thank eveyone for the feedback. It's strange were I live have 0 help for autistic people. at the moment am very Isolated people scare me so its hard for me to get out there and interact with them. maby that needs its own topic : / I just kinda feel that no matter what I do people are gonna yell at me. kinda strange coming from a 40 yr old male.

  • get ur profile filled out as much as possible so we can help you and get to know you.

yes i was in shock/confused for a month. But you will settle down and be at peace.

i agree with  go into you tube and search for fellow autistic people who explain things using videos which i found very good. eg aspie world. princess aspie, agony audie. Also try out the Tedx channel in youtube for information on autism. The more you know about your autism the better. Look for your traits in other people and get to know all the hidden traits you may have. I have hidden stimming eg i didnt know doodling on paper is a type of stimming.

It is key you keep in contact in this blog for collective support, information, and general fun

    welcome to your new family

  • Hi,

I was diagnosed at Hill House just a month ago. I'm still waiting for the report and don't expect it any time soon. I had verbal info given to me at the end of the last assessment recommended that I look into resources and support online myself. Here on this site is a very good start :)

I just posted a question here this week about feeling wound up after the diagnosis (I was at first quite elated and relieved but going through motions now) -

I've also made enquires with Autism West Midlands about joining their social group meeting in West Brom:

All the very best Slight smile

  • Hello and welcome to the forum! I was diagnosed at the end of last year at the age of 37. I think that it’s very common for people to feel a bit ‘ok what happens now, where do I go from here’ following diagnosis. Will you have a follow-up appointment with the assessment centre? In terms of what to do now:

    1. Self refer or ask your CPN/GP to refer you to your local Adult Autism Services for post diagnosis support.

    2. Phone the helpline on this website to enquire about what other support etc you may be able to get https://www.autism.org.uk/get-involved/about-us/contact-us.aspx

    3. Google search local ASD support groups and social groups. If you drive it might be worth seeing if there are groups in nearby towns too.

    4. Keep talking with people on here to help you through the ‘wilderness’ of post diagnosis!

    Hope this helps Slight smile

  • Hi - welcome to the group.

I'm still waiting for my diagnosis, so I can't speak from personal experience yet, but there are lots of very helpful people in this group. Hopefully you'll get the answers you need. I have noticed (from other people's forum posts) that feeling overwhelmed/confused after a diagnosis is very common, so I'd say these feelings you're having are normal.

Try looking at Purple Ella's videos on YouTube - she shares her experiences on day-to-day life with autism and has lots of good advice.
