Propranolol

so I’ve been prescribed propranolol for anxiety and I currently only take them when I’m about to do something that makes me anxious or if I’m randomly anxious. This is currently not often due to the fact I currently do nothing, stay in my room on Xbox or pc. My questions is should I carry on only taking as and when I need or start taking regularly. If yes why and what’s your experience with them?

Thanks guys.

  • Of course Beta-Blockers only help with the physical symptoms of anxiety - you will still feel stressed but the body wont feel it as much. If you want to relieve anxiety mentally, you have to look towards the SSRI type of drugs.

BTW Battlefield is the only game I play, not keen on 5 but loved 4 - looking forward to BC3 next year :)

  • I’m definitely taking it a lot less compared to when I was in work. The only recurrent times I take it now is when I go over the in-laws, the aren’t very supportive or welcoming which spikes my social anxieties and playing battlefield, I love the game but god does it boil my blood at times and raise stress levels lol.

  • Certainly double check with your GP, but I found it helpful to just take them as the need arose and I'm fairly sure my GP suggested this (although this was now a very long time ago).  Over time what I also found was that I could build up other strategies to help with my anxiety and the propanalol could be tapered off.  I went through a phase of hardly using it but having it in my pocket just in case, then there was a period of around a year where I carried it round, just for the reassurance of knowing it was there if I needed it.  Now I can't remember the last time i needed it.

  • I take mine as and when I need to, as I take mine to prevent Atrial Fibrillation - it basically blocks the production of adrenaline, so if you take them and do exercise, you'll feel tired very quickly :)

  • Take them as directed on the the instructions on the label the pharmacist put on the box. If those aren't clear contact whoever prescribed them to get a clearer explaination.

Propranolol is a beta-blocker, and I'd really ask a professional who knows your situation for advice. Don't dial 111. Speak to your GP, CPN, or Psychiatrist.

Just looking out for you. Beta-blockers can cause serious problems if you aren't taking them right. So look after yourself!

    All the best,

    Cloudy
