With my friend he's done online autism questionnaires and had lots of people dropping hints, nothing direct unfortunately, I think what your counsellor did was a good thing, I wish my friend had somne be direct with him, would of saved him a lot of grief, I think persistance with your GP and recognising the traits is key
Hi, yeah I am in a very similar position, been told I am autistic by a councellor who's not qualified to diagnose it. Would very much like an actual diagnosis, either way. Plan to go to the GP, I know someone who has fone this and managed to get diagnosed but I am very nervous about this my GP's tend to be very dismissive, after any hints for how to get them to take me seriously that I can get

thankyou Windscale
In the UK, I think technically your GP should be able to refer you for assessment, but I think what provision there is for that varies from place to place. To make that conversation productive I'd suggest you need to do some "homework" first. You want to try and make a compelling case for why you think this might be impacting you. You can pre-complete the adult AQ and EQ tests that you can find here:
https://www.autismresearchcentre.com/arc_tests
with the scoring criteria. I'd also do some research around autistic "symptoms" and have a bit of a life history put together with examples of where you think you've had difficulties in life as a result of having these "symptoms" and how this might explain any difficulties you've suffered, such as repeat depression etc.
There's also this advice on the NAS website:
