Trouble Drinking Water

Heyy does anyone else struggle with drinking water or even remembering to do so?

I am hydrated cause i drink other healthy liquids with water in like iced coffee with oat milk and fruit smoothies but drinking water is hard. It can even feel weird or a bit sickening to swallow water but with other liquids it's fine.

  • It is probably to do with viscosity and surface adhesion properties of liquids. Adding other things to water, such as milk, oat milk, sugar etc. will change these properties and change the 'mouth feel'.  It doesn't matter that you do not like drinking water as anything with a high water content will work to hydrate you. Even low alcohol drinks will do the same. Back in the day, when water was not safe to drink, due to disease organisms and chemical contamination, people drank beer - even at breakfast ('small beer' very low in alcohol).

  • If you were to add milk to water you'd have to have coffee in it at least otherwise it tastes awful.

But it's not really about not liking to drink water, i actually wish i could drink more of it without all the extras like coffee/oat milk. It's a feeling problem like sickness.

  • I was dissecting the physics of how liquids feel in the mouth, not writing recipes. As water does not have much of a taste, it really has to be a physical property of water that you find problematic. Not all liquids behave the same. Olive oil is a liquid, but, ignoring the taste, it has physical properties that make it different to water. You could drink olive oil, but it would never quench thirst, because its 'wetting' properties and viscosity are different to water. I, like many people, find cold tea quite repellent, but I like hot tea. Obviously the two taste the same, they have the same ingredients, the difference is in the temperature, which affects the mouth-feel. Therefore, mouth feel, independent of taste, can have a large effect on whether something is palatable or not.

  • Hi Martin, I really enjoyed reading your scientific take on why it might be more difficult to drink certain fluids. :) but then of course I'm a scientist too :)
