th anks this info helps alot i now know what to ask when i visit the asd unit i hadnt even tthought of any of this as i didnt know how much the unit could potentially provide i will certainly do as you suggest thanks again. 

Arrange a visit if you can and see what they have to say.  If their target is some degree of inclusion in the mainstream, do get a clear statement from them, if you do go, on how much time your son can spend out of the mainstream if he needs to, and ensure that you can pull him out of subjects/classes which prove too stressful.  Your own target is a happy child, as settled as he can be, so it's worth checking that the school's is the same and not something measured purely in potential GCSEs.

 i know one of our schools has a unit for asd children and if they are situated separately from the main school and my son doesnt have to worry about mixing with the other more able children then it would be good.

Do any of your local secondaries have an ASD unit?

yes a huge issue he would never cope with that, it would probably set his development back alot

You would generally find that a secondary school has many more students. (some include 6th forms too) Is that an issue for your son?
