Pens

I know this comes across as ridiculous but what other country has primary schools which:

1. Make children write in pencil until their handwriting is 'good enough' then issues them with a 'pen licence' allowing them to write with a pen.

2. Uses the Berol Handwriting Pens. Which many children find uncomfortable and difficult to use.

3. Prohibits children from writing, or doing homework, with a biro pen.

There are times when I think that large numbers of primary school teachers have their heads up their backsides and perpetuate bizarre and peculiarly British cultural practises from one generation to the next....

  • To the best of my knowledge pen licences are issued in KS2. I cannot understand the logic of why kids have to write to a certain subjective standard with a pencil before being allowed to write with a pen then a teacher can revoke a pen licence if handwriting deteriorates.

The mentality of primary school teachers and the parallel universe they inhabit never ceases to amaze me.

I was writing homework in a pen when I was in KS1 despite my teacher insisting that it be written in pencil. In KS2 the teachers got uptight if homework was written in anything other than a Berol Handwriting Pen or a fountain pen, and pens could only be used by kids with a pen licence at school.

It made me wonder if a similar situation took place in schools in other countries.
