school refusal - who can advise?

Hi, one of my 13 year old twins is frequently refusing (mainstream) school. I have read all around this topic and it seems that for the most part, the school are trying to adress all of the issues (which are not always obvious) and I am in constant contact with them. I think what I would like to know more than anything is which agencies are well-placed to help us with this? We already see a clinical psychologist who is taking a very softly softly approach to helping my son be able to cope, and he has been referred to Autism Outreach through school but they are not directly involved yet.

Also, any strategies to cope on a day to day basis would be helpful. I have been riding this emotional rollercoaster for too long now with the two boys and the ongoing battles with the authorities etc. I know there are many of you who are i the same position and I do have a good local support network of friends who are sympathetic, but feel I might need more at the moment.

Many thanks in advance, Tracey

  • Just wanted to say hello and hoping you get the help you and your sons need.

My daughter has been given a diagnosis of being on the autistic spectrum and has difficulties with meeting course work deadlines or even starting certain projects due to her perfectionism.

Recently this has resulted in her being mentally over-loaded so I have kept her off school a day at the most in a week here and there. I  know how easily it could tip in to total avoidance so I have to act like a cheer leader and coach and sometimes have to insist - cruel to be kind.  I also make her breakfast even though she is 15, check her timetable for help with packing her bag (something she is unable to face the night before) fetch her coat, tell her how much time she has left before we have to leave the house to walk quite a way to the bus stop.

On the days she is off, I always contact the school first thing by email or phone to explain.  I think as long as they know what is happening, and why, they are more understanding.

But I can see you are having much deeper problems.  You might like to contact the following which is run by parents who have faced similar problems to yourself.

But looks like it's not been up-dated recently - just look up school refusal and see what you find.

I found this e-learning site which your son could use to learn from home, you may need a referral for here
