5yr old son recently diagnosed, behavioural frustration

Hi everyone,

im new to this and am reaching out to others. my son is in his first year of primary school and recently his behaviour has gotten worse. He took a grow spurt over the summer holiday and is now the biggest in the class he height and broadness. He has tendencies to lash out and can be very controlling. My partner and I have been brought into the school due to his hitting and unrulines on several occasion. We do have spells of this behaviour at home but not quite the same magnitude as he appears to be having at school. I'm worried now he's been diagnosed is it just a matter of time before he's taken out of main stream school? Or is there help to improve this situation. please advise...

  • hi,

thanks for the reply, I appreciate your own view of the situation. We are constantly expressing to our son on how to try and deal with his emotions. As the pent up frustration can cause him to be violent and unpredictable. We ask him to take a few minutes quiet time if he has lashed out or what we have done is if he feels what's going is too much, then try playing something else. He is great with small groups and excellent one to one, as the school try to introduce class activities or a change in the school schedule. He has a very hard time trying to adapt and this is where the frustration stems causing him to express himself in tearful tantrums. He was literally at school for 45 minutes the other day... dropped off at 9.00am called at 9:45am by teacher to collect him. Reasons behind it were he is unsettled and can not be talked down, so I collected him and he was absolutely fine came home done some work play etc returned to school next day. Then upon coming home the following day was told he spent the whole of lunch 45 minutes sitting outside head teachers office because he was hitting in the dinner hall, made to eat lunch outside the office also no play time. I was absolutely livid to find how they had dealt with this situation.
