5yr old son recently diagnosed, behavioural frustration

Hi everyone,

im new to this and am reaching out to others. my son is in his first year of primary school and recently his behaviour has gotten worse. He took a grow spurt over the summer holiday and is now the biggest in the class he height and broadness. He has tendencies to lash out and can be very controlling. My partner and I have been brought into the school due to his hitting and unrulines on several occasion. We do have spells of this behaviour at home but not quite the same magnitude as he appears to be having at school. I'm worried now he's been diagnosed is it just a matter of time before he's taken out of main stream school? Or is there help to improve this situation. please advise...

  • Hello,

I had the same problem with my son in p1,....I'm not sure this will make sense , but it's my take on how I delt with exactly the same issues,

You see your kid thinks literally....If he doesn't like someone he thinks it's okay to maybe hit them or say horrible  things, because that's his understanding of how to act if you don't like a person,

Don't forget the teachers drum into him how he has to always be nice ....this is exactly what happened to my son then it hit me (no pun intended).....I remember walking into the school play ground to my son getting into trouble again for hitting another kid,....I walked over to where they were standing and looked at my son and said....wee man it's okay if you don't like this or that person in fact pal you can hate them if you want to ,.....but please just don't talk or hit them became you don't like them , stay away from people you don't like because if you don't  then you're not going to be a nice person,.....

I kid you not you could see the weights lifting,...this one piece of understanding really helped him ,

Kids with asd need everything to be broken down to a basic level of understanding then build on that ,

He is now 16 yesterday and mainstream highschool hoping and talking about university!

    Don't give up,
