Incontinence

My child is statemented (25 hrs).  As well as Autism and ADHD my child has a bowel condition.  We have a meeting with the school next Monday re my child's incontinence issues.  As far as I am aware my child is taken to the toilet when they ask but their 1:1 waits outside the door and my child is not checked or helped with clean up. My child is unable to clean themself successfully.  My child always comes home soiled - I provide the school with pads, wipes, bags etc but the school do not use them.  I have been phoned a few times to come and sort my child out which is very difficult when I am working.  They expect my child to be able to sort themself out but because of behavioral difficulties (Autism/ADHD) this is not the case.
Any advice?
Thanks,

Caroline

  • Does your child have an EHCP?  If so, continence management should be detailed there ... if it is not mentioned in the EHCP ask for it to be added. If the school is not cooperating go to your local authority SEN team for advice. If continence support is part of the plan the school must provide it.  Contact your SENCO, and if no progress write to the Head Teacher and copy in the "Named Governor for SEND" The school office will provide contact details.

  • Talk to the sendco about this. It may be that they don't have staff who are comfortable dealing with this, or it could be due to concerns about safeguarding. (They might want to have two people present to guard against any allegations of abuse in such an intimate process.) But if it is part of your child's daily care needs, then they should be attending to it properly.

  • I feel for you.I being autism +dd have the same trouble but learned to handle it.Good luck
