Separate work area for Asperger's child?

Hi all,

Our 6yr old son has Asperger's (not yet diagnosed but we're quite sure). His teacher has been great and she is now suggesting a quiet area in the class to avoid sensory overload. There are occassions where he can't do any work because of all the distractions around him - this is something we've seen at home too - and she thinks he'll be able to concentrate on his work in a screened off area.

She has been clear that it is not a punishment, but I'm not sure if this is the right thing to do? What do people think? Is this the best way to help Asperger's kids succeed at school. Will it make him look different to his class and lead to social problems?

Thanks,

  • Hi, I can understand your concern.  It will mark him out from his classmates.  Seems a bit OTT.  What are his sensory issues?  How does he manage at play time, PE lessons?  If I were you I'd be asking for further discussions about his sensory issues to see if there was anything else that could be done, rather than screenig him off.  It may be me, but I've never heard of a child being literally screened off within a class room.  I've heard of autistic children ( + perhaps others) being able to access a quiet room.
