Problems at school

My 14 year old son has adhd and more recently being diagnosed with aspergers.  My son is struggling at school. He cannot concentrate, does not take in information.  His reading is very bad,  writing is a scrawl.  he sits in class and struggles to get started with work and most of the time does not understand what the teacher is on about and switches off.  He never does homework.  He is late most days and misses a lot of his classes.  I have asked if he could get extra help but I was told that there was not any available.  There has in the past been a general teaching assistant in some of the classes but that is to assist all the pupils, a class of 30 or more.  I was told today that maybe a smaller school would be better.  I do not want my son to change schools as this one is local and he does not like to travel. I was told that if he was in a smaller class group then he would get More one to one help.

If that is the case then what do I have to do to get this.  Anyone with similar problems your help would be most appreciated.  My doctors surgery say that he should be getting extra help so why am I struggling to get this.

  • He does not want to go to another school, especially a special school.  there is a very bad stigma.  He doesn't like to travel and the school he is at is just around the corner.  There are no other secondary schools anywhere near.   As he sometimes leaves school I would be worried sick as he has no sense of direction.  He recently went into town with friends, they somehow were separated and he got on the right number bus but heading the opposite way.  He panicked as he had no idea where he was and as it was late there was no one around.  he eventually same across someone who gave him money to get home.  To this day we have no idea where he was.

He has what you call a short term plan (additional support plan) but that is for behaviour.  The support plan is that Mark must improve his effort in class.  It says he is responsible  for being able to focus more in class, ask for help when struggling, not to go home after lunch and to attend every class.  These are all the things he is struggling with.  He has the same help in class as anyone else, the normal class teacher and in the past there was  a classroom assistant.  Again this was for everyone.  There are over 30 in the class.  Thanks for the advice you gave I will look into it.
