Problems at school

My 14 year old son has adhd and more recently being diagnosed with aspergers.  My son is struggling at school. He cannot concentrate, does not take in information.  His reading is very bad,  writing is a scrawl.  he sits in class and struggles to get started with work and most of the time does not understand what the teacher is on about and switches off.  He never does homework.  He is late most days and misses a lot of his classes.  I have asked if he could get extra help but I was told that there was not any available.  There has in the past been a general teaching assistant in some of the classes but that is to assist all the pupils, a class of 30 or more.  I was told today that maybe a smaller school would be better.  I do not want my son to change schools as this one is local and he does not like to travel. I was told that if he was in a smaller class group then he would get More one to one help.

If that is the case then what do I have to do to get this.  Anyone with similar problems your help would be most appreciated.  My doctors surgery say that he should be getting extra help so why am I struggling to get this.

  • Hello Jaydee,

I work in a special needs school and although a 14 year old boy might think the stigma is bad it really is not. The class sizes are about 8-9 students and each class teacher has a Teaching Assistant. He will be so much happier there and get the support he needs. Not only academically but for his social development too. If his needs are not being met in mainstream the LEA and the school have a duty of care Also some students the more severe needs have 1:1 assistance. You should look at Crystal's suggestion of extra home help. See your local education authority. Speak to the school they should have a record of all the incidents your son has been in. This can be used as evidence to support your case to get him extra help.

    All the best

  • He attends a clinic for his adhd and we have looked at everything.  Due to the medication he is on he does not eat very much. thanks for the advice.

  • He does not want to go to another school, especially a special school.  there is a very bad stigma.  He doesn't like to travel and the school he is at is just around the corner.  There are no other secondary schools anywhere near.   As he sometimes leaves school I would be worried sick as he has no sense of direction.  He recently went into town with friends, they somehow were separated and he got on the right number bus but heading the opposite way.  He panicked as he had no idea where he was and as it was late there was no one around.  he eventually same across someone who gave him money to get home.  To this day we have no idea where he was.

He has what you call a short term plan (additional support plan) but that is for behaviour.  The support plan is that Mark must improve his effort in class.  It says he is responsible  for being able to focus more in class, ask for help when struggling, not to go home after lunch and to attend every class.  These are all the things he is struggling with.  He has the same help in class as anyone else, the normal class teacher and in the past there was  a classroom assistant.  Again this was for everyone.  There are over 30 in the class.  Thanks for the advice you gave I will look into it.

Have you looked at his diet? There are foods that aggravate autism and adhd. See Sue Dengate's site for her exclusion diet to see if this might help.

The Feingold diet is similar and has its advocates.

  • Hi - you shd check out the home pg re. getting a TA/extra help for your son or try the ipsea site for info The school sounds like they've washed their hands of things. If the special needs school is def too far way, then, on the face of it that's a pity because it wd have been worth a look + home-school transport is sometimes provided.  Are there any autism-specific schools nr you.  He def needs some support, otherwise he isn't getting an education + is likely to be under a load of stress day in day out.  Good luck.
