Extreme Autistic Burnout Routine

Hi

My eight year old Autistic daughter (awaiting assessment) is in extreme burnout and as such isn't currently attending school. She has significant anxiety.

CAMHS saw her for her first appt two weeks ago and now that psychologist is leaving so hasn't arranged further appts as he doesn't want to build a relationship then leave her. We are awaiting a new psychologist and a plan but this could be weeks. Then obviously 'treatment' will likely be months.

School are understanding and have agreed to send work home which is optional and will put a reduced timetable in place once she can return. We do not have an EHCP yet.

She is currently unable to wear clothes, eat properly, brush teeth and hair regularly, she's stopped engaging with her hobbies, is nauseous most of the time and rarely leaves the house. Currently we spend 90% of the day watching her favourite TV and trying to avoid meltdown. She can no longer mask.

My question is what should I be doing? I am concerned she's missing out on school, life, friendships etc and the further behind she is the harder it'll be to return.

I cannot homeschool. I am looking at different provisions just in case. I am also in touch with a tutor to help her keep up as she has very low self esteem and it will be damaging to go back to school feeling 'stupid' from being behind.

Do I just let her watch TV and lay around all day until she asks to do more? Or do I gently push her?

I am also AuDHD and I am really struggling without routine and being stuck in the house every day.

I am so lost and concerned I am failing her in some way. I 1000% understand what burnout is and how it has come about but in the dark on how to approach recovery.

Cheers

GF

This looks like a very difficult situation to be a part of - It sounds as though your daughter is experiencing an incredible amount of stress at the moment, although, going by your message, there is also frustration on your part, in the way you are being emotionally and physically taxed.

One thing is very clear here, mind you - you are an incredibly caring person, as shown by the way in which you are stretching yourself to be available. This sounds like the furthest thing from failing your daughter,, through being present and trying your best.

While I am sure that our community will have fantastic feedback to provide, I would like to, in the meantime, provide you with several NAS approved resources:

Autistic fatigue and burnout - Information and resources relating to burnout.

Meltdowns - Information and resources relating to Meltdowns.

Autism Services Directory - A list of services located around the UK, some of which may relate to psychiatric and educational support.

Tutoring for Autistic Students | Autism Central - NHS information related to tutoring for autistic children.

Helpline – SOS!SEN - A free helpline relating to education.

SENDIASS Home - Kids - information and support relating to education.

You and your daughter truly deserve the best in this situation. I hope that appropriate support reaches you quite soon.

Take care of yourself my friend.

    Thanks - Zac mod.
