Another School Exclusion - Frustrated!!!

My son has just had another exclusion from school due to his behaviour and this is the 2nd time he has been exluded!!He is in a mainstream school and we are waiting for the school to employ a 1:1 TA with special needs experience for him which was decided he needed this assistance after his last exclusion in July. Each time that there has been excluded a supply teacher has been in charge of the class and I question whether his IBP has been followed. I am so frustrated by these exclusion as my son doesnt understand them and they are pointless as all he sees is him getting a couple of days off school!

Has anyone else experinced their child being excluded from school for a few days for their behaviours?? Just need advice and support as feel like my parenting skills are being questions as they always ask if had a bad morning, did he eat anything different etc?? Then the guilt set in could I have done somthing to prevent these behaviours etc!!

  • I was excluded from school soooooooo many times when I was a kid and can definitely relate to your son - exclusions are pointless and don't make the slightest bit of difference. It sounds like your son's school had the same problem as mine - they completely lack understanding of Asperger's and can't be bothered to prepare for having a child with the condition in their school. I would definitely recommend registering an objection with the governors if you can. Also, if and when he gets a TA assigned to him, the school needs to make sure the TA actually understands him as an individual. All my TAs were rubbish apart from this one guy who actually respected me as an individual rather than making assumptions on me based on skim-reading an outdated textbook on autism. Without him, I would be a very different person. Do you mind me asking if your son faces any bullying at his school? If he does, the school needs to address it properly

  • Thanks for your comments.

I have considered registering an obecjection but do wonder whether its worth it as they seem to make many excuses and blame it all on his behaviour and never consider their failings that have lead to his behaviour.

I have a meeting with the school tomorrow when he returns to school and I will be bringing up my worries with them then.

  • I'm failing to understand why, when the school acknowledges that the problems are arising from your sons Autism as shown by   "we are waiting for the school to employ a 1:1 TA with special needs experience for him which was decided he needed this assistance after his last exclusion in July", they consider it appropriate to punish your son for any incedent.

Further the pattern of difficuty arising in times of teacher substitution strongly indicates to me that the subs inexperience/incompetance or lack of proper motivation are the precipitating factors here...the regular teachers have not found it necessary to exclude your son...

Have you registered some kind of objection?

My experience from school was that supply teachers were often unable to control a class properly. A class of uncontrolled children being rowdy is probably an impossible situation for an autistic child who is likely to have a meltdown from all of the sensory overload arising from the situation.

Are there any other schools that might be better managed that you could move him to?
