Six year old son

Hi all new to the website and hoping to get some advice regarding music year old son. I hope it’s ok at post given our current situation.

He’s always been a bit challenging but he’s recently turned six and as yet is undiagnosed with anything. I think he has PDA. His behaviour is as follows;

He gets frustrated playing with his own toys , ie action figures. He will for example try and put an action figure into a toy car that doesn’t fit, but gets angry because it doesn’t fit. It’s like he can’t see that the figure isn’t designed to be put inside the toy car rather  than think that for himself.

Beige foods- he eats pasta , nuggets and scrambled egg, potato waffles. He’s previously eaten some fruit and veg but now just refuses to even try.

He refuses to get dressed for school and brush his teeth. He shouts at us and tells us he doesn’t want to and calls us stupid and similar things.

He goes to school and so far his behaviour is fine , it’s when he gets home it seems to change. He does have friends and generally plays well with them.

We took him recently to a GP appointment regarding his behaviour, the GP said she wasn’t sure she could diagnose him with anything as he’s still quite young… although the GP did send us some online links about parenting through the local children services centre. The school have been written to aswell but they haven’t informed us of anything as yet.

It just seems we’re in limbo. We struggle to know how to parent him and it seems we’re in a bit of a rut. We also have a daughter who’s 11 who’s a completely different child.

  • Hi Jamie26,

    Welcome to the online community.

    I am sorry to hear about your experience with the GP and that you haven't been able to get the help you need for your son. A 6 year old is able to have an autism assessment.

    You are able to go back to you doctors surgery and speak to another GP to get a second opinion. You can read about this on our 'how to request an autism assessment' along with advice on speaking to your GP that you may find helpful.

    Best wishes,

    Alice Mod

  • Hey, it does sound like you do need help, and it's strange the doctor says he's too young, as I've heard that for under 3 but not for 6.

    It can be difficult to get through to see the right people that can give you help, sometimes you get lucky and someone points you straight in the right direction, where as other times, no one seems to help at all.

    I think you want to try get on a waiting list for CAMHS, in England I thought you could go through the doctor for that, although another avenue should be through the school. It can be difficult if they mask it at school and then let it all out at home, but it is also very typical. But if you explain the effect it's having on him, the school should still help and start gathering evidence to support any potential diagnosis (for children the school need to be part of the process).

    Also, the food, it is so tough when everything tells you they need a balanced diet, but eating just beige food is at least eating food, and possibly just trying different things every now and again without pressure (which your probably doing already), and there is always vitamins if you can find one he likes?

    It sounds like a very challenging time, I hope you can keep your heads up and I suppose just keep trying and hopefully you'll get him some support. Take care!
