New to This

Hello,

We are currently going through the diagnosis process for my 13 year old DD.

i am new to this and a bit blindsided I guess as I didn’t really consider autism, although the more I read I can see more and more light bulb moments.

where do I start to support my Daughter? Also, as parents what resources to help us come to terms with this?

Feeling lost and out of my depth.

thank you

  • Hi (Anna?),

My daught is 12 years old, and was diagnosed in Year 6 just before turning 11. Without certain events happening in Year 5, we would have easily missed considering autism too. We were struggling for years with what we thought were behavioural issues - maybe the same for you? Autism for girls has a very different presentation than boys.

Hopefully you will get support and understanding from getting her a diagnosis. The next best place we have found to engage with is the school SEN team. My daughters provision has been excellent - once faught for by us - and they have been able to help us navigate some issues too.

I'm still struggling with finding parent support, but coming on forums like this helps, especially if you can connect with other families going through similar experiences, they are all so different.

Sounds like I am a couple of years further down the track than you - let me know if you want to connect more directly, maybe through email?
