Socks

Hi everyone,

My six year old son is autistic, and has always found clothing textures challenging. He’s generally been okay in soft fairly loose (not too loose) fitting clothes, and although socks have always been a bit troublesome we’ve managed.

Over the last month or so socks have become intolerable for him, to the point where we’re struggling to get him out of the house as he can’t wear socks at all (he can’t tolerate shoes/wellies without socks or being outside barefoot). We used to have a huge pile of socks by the door and try different pairs until one felt okay. Most often it’s the feeling of the seam bump on his toes, but we’ve tried seamless socks and he can’t wear these either. Sometimes it’s the heel, and other times how they feel on his legs. We had some success with M&S ultimate comfort socks, but after a week or two wasn’t able to wear them anymore.

He’s clearly distressed by how they feel. Can anyone recommend any kids socks that have worked for them or their children?

Thanks!

  • I’ve always been incredibly particular about socks. If I find a type I like I end up buying lots of pairs of them as it’s hard to find a type I like. Can you ask your son what it is about the socks he doesn’t like? For me I hate socks that are too thin, clingy or tight. I only buy socks made from natural fibres, like cotton or wool. I can’t stand stretchy, synthetic socks. I used to buy 100% cotton socks, but now I buy wool as they are so cosy. The ones I get at the moment are by a company called Finisterre - but I think they start at an adult size 4.

  • Thank you for your reply. He has trouble communicating sometimes what it is that bothers him, but in the past he’s said the bumpy bits on the toes (I think this is the main issue), but has also said some don’t fit round the heel, feel too tight on his legs, or go too far (or not far enough) up his legs. He’s managing a bit better with his M&S ultimate comfort ones again, I have a routine that I got through with him a bit like a checklist where we check all the troublesome bits and adjust them one by one as needed. It must be so hard for him. He doesn’t really like the feel of any clothes though to be honest, tends to take it all off whenever he can.
