Need some advice

We're currently going through multiple appoints for our 3 year old. These include Speech and Language, paediatrics, occupational therapy, sleep practitioners, portage and we're on the waiting list for physiotherapy. The investigation has been going on for just over a year and I'm not entirely sure who will be able to and how long it will take to come to a decision.

He is non verbal, stims a lot, plays with the same toys at home and pre school, tends to play on his own rather than with other children, doesn't tend to respond when we say his name, can't follow instructions as well as other things.

Are these all common traits of autism because I don't really know and neither does my husband. There isn't any history of it in the family either.

Any advice anyone has I will be very grateful for

  • Hi LLawrence, Unfortunately, I am limited by the rules of the site regarding your question, however yes these are all traits of autism. Has you son had assessment yet with the paediatrician?

I'm not sure of the age that is the cut off for when the paediatrician service will consider autism as a diagnosis. I think that often the right to choose service will not look at diagnosing until 6 years of age.

Has your son had any blood tests to look into what might be causing his difficulties. They often are the first port of call into looking at other reasons.

    xx

  • We've had 1 appointment with the paediatrician which was in July. We've got our 2nd appointment on March 3rd. Yes he has also had blood and urine tests and they have all come back normal.
