Need some advice

We're currently going through multiple appoints for our 3 year old. These include Speech and Language, paediatrics, occupational therapy, sleep practitioners, portage and we're on the waiting list for physiotherapy. The investigation has been going on for just over a year and I'm not entirely sure who will be able to and how long it will take to come to a decision.

He is non verbal, stims a lot, plays with the same toys at home and pre school, tends to play on his own rather than with other children, doesn't tend to respond when we say his name, can't follow instructions as well as other things.

Are these all common traits of autism because I don't really know and neither does my husband. There isn't any history of it in the family either.

Any advice anyone has I will be very grateful for

  • Whilst I am autistic myself and have grown up children that have autistic traits not formally diagnosed as autism I have not had the same experience as yourself.

So direct comment not appropriate and I hope that others will be able to be more helpful with that.

    For now tho'

I can say that I have encountered reports of both the wider service and individual professsionals not being quick to formalise on an autism diagnosis with children and do not feel it appropriate to conjecture - especially in such an important matter.

Here's a link to a parent support group for those with autistic children - I have found - it might be worth contacting them and asking whether they might be a support group for people such as yourself too. About | Autistic Parents UK

There will no doubt be others in a similar situation to yourself to be able to collaborate with and provide mutual support.

You and your family have my very best wishes
