Dogs in housing

Hi everyone I’m new here, I’m in need of some advice, I am 34 years old and diagnosed autistic and adhd among many other mental illnesses , I’m about to be without a home in July after I finish university due to the death of my father, I have also got my dog Poppy who I can’t survive without her, I’m very scared I’d have to be separated from her as I’m applying for housing through the counci/housing authority l and that would cause severe emotional turmoil, I’ve tried to get a letter from my gp to say she is key for my mental wellbeing and mental stability but they refused to do that, I’ve tried to call everywhere that could help but nobody wants to help me…

any advice on how I’d be able to keep her with me would be appreciated…

thank you

Charlie

  • I hadn't thought about this till you said it, but there is social housing flats nearby and most of them have dogs, so it must be to do with the place?

If you do end up in temporary that don't allow pets, see if someone could help you out till with looking after her maybe till you get a place she can move in with you?  Not the best option, but it helps to not think of anything as final, and only a step to where you need to get to.

  • Hi Charlie - I'm so sorry to hear this. So much for you to deal with and Poppy will be so important to you. I don't have any direct suggestions as I'm not familiar with housing authority policies, etc. But in addition to this forum (which I so hope will come up with the answer for you) I wonder if there are experts from NAS who may be able to guide you...? Or perhaps google the problem and see what it comes up with...? Probably useless suggestions, but hope one or the other might lead you to the next step.

  • Temporary accommodation might not accept a dog. Permanent housing usually does unless it's not seen as suitable for a dog. I've lived in social housing and they accepted pets. If you're applying for housing now then just make sure it accepts pets.

  • I am sorry but I really don’t know of anything else that may help.

If I were in your situation I probably would first find out what the policy on dogs is at the housing authority you are dealing with and take it from there. If they don’t have a policy or refuse to accept dogs, I would probably make out a list of the ways my dog supports me. If time permits, I would do this over days/weeks, editing the information so that it cover all the essential points. Use the list to formulate a master letter for making multiple copies if needed and send it/them to the people concerned.

  • hi, I did try going to cab but they couldn’t help me either I’m being constantly run around in circles and constantly getting put at a dead end, I’m lost on what to do…

if there is anything else I could do please give me advice because I don’t know who else to contact or turn to…

    thanks

  • I understand how you feel about your dog Poppy as my dogs are my family and I get on better with them than people.

If you have an assistance dog you have some rights https://caninepartners.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/ADUK-Quick-Guide-to-Assistance-Dogs-in-Rented-Accommodation.pdf

If your dog is for emotional support, the law does not recognise that need.

It might be worth seeing if CAB could format a letter from you to the housing authority that would elaborate on the support your dog gives you. That way you give yourself the best chance you can to get appropriate housing. I believe some places recognise how important dogs are to people for their mental well-being, although this is just something I remember reading about a few times,

    Good luck!
