Unauthorised absence autistic burnout

My 12 yr old has joined secondary this year and is burning out fast. He’s off sick today but from the school policy there’s nothing related to autism & im worried it’ll be unauthorised.

has anyone got any advice please?

  • I work in a school and really encourage you to talk to the school about your child’s needs. They may be able to find ways to reduce chance of burnout in future, or they might be able to allow him to ‘work from home’ rather than missing out completely. No school wants kids absent, but they also don’t want to fail at supporting students especially those with SEN. Clear and open communication is the best way forwards, if needs be, remind them of their obligation to make reasonable adjustments for SEN students. Of course how your school responds will depend on how responsive they are to student needs, but it can’t hurt to ask/explain. Hope this helps.
