FAO of Teachers, please contribute to my survey

Many teachers who work with children with autism will be aware of the difficulties we face when trying to get an accurate picture of their abilities.  This is particularly true when we are trying to assess the literacy skills of children with minimum verbal ability.

I am a teacher of children with ASD and a Phd student who is passionate about teaching and learning for students with ASD and I am looking for schools to participate in my research.

I have designed a survey which is part of a wider study which aims to examine the advantages and disadvantages that current reading assessments offer to our students with ASD and how the situation might be improved.

If you are a teacher in a special school and you haven’t yet received your link to my online survey, or if you just want to know more about my research (removed by mod)

  • Hi DrSeuss,

    Thanks for the clarification.

I'm not surprized about the response you are receiveing in an era when teaching is overwhelmed with adminstative duties, i can imagine few have the time. I'm happy to pass on the names of two estabishments, but i cannot guarentee a response. My sons former School and One of my boys Colleges are two that seem to be embracing those with ASD in Education. The College/FE setting has made my son a student ambassador for Autism in the College he attends. During Autism Awareness training for staff, he's been asked to talk about his experiences and how ASD affects his access to educuation. Additionally, he helps others with ASD within the College environment on a more informal basis.

Would you like me to forward these names etc on to you?

Having a named contact at each School might help your plight a little, as few seem to respond to a more open invitations of assisstance with these surveys.

You can contact me directly on (removed by mod).

I wish you luck and hope that your research continues to improve things for those on the spectrum.

    Regards

  • I have trained college staff with regards to autism strategies (I am a teacher in a school and self employed as a trainer/consultant to other settings) and I've become very aware of a problem in the post 16 sector.  Mostly, in my experience, this is down to the post 16 staff not receiving the support and training they need.  Also, issues with their management teams when they try to put the necessary changes in place.

Any educationation establishment that has experience of ASD is welcome to complete the survey and the sections address mainstream and SEN settings.  The issue I am having is trying to get in touch with so many settings (I'm using the Schools Web Directory at the moment and a lot of info. is out of date) and a general lack of response.  I think only about 1 in 10 schools have responded so far - if that!

Thanks so much for your interest :)

  • Hi DrSeuss,

Can I ask, is your survey only restriced to Special Schools?

My sons went to a mainstream School with a particularly forward thinking approach to ASD support in the School environmment.

So much so, that they also invited one of my sons to talk with both prospectice parents and pupils on Open Evenings about what support was available for those on the spectrum at the School.
I must say however, that i've encountered much more difficulty in the College/FE sector with regard to support issues. Colleges often favouring to drop the student to a level less commenserate with their ability, rather than supporting them properly.
I'm not a teacher you understand, just interested in whether you are extending your study to educational establishments other than special Schools
