Siblings

I just want to know if anyone else in this community has a brother or sister with autism? Or is autistic and has a sibling with or without autism?  Or maybe you are a parent with an autistic child and other siblings?

I would like to hear abour your experiences.

I have two younger siblings with autism.  I have learnt alot growing up alongside them and I have both good and bad memories along the way.  I currently don't live in the same house as them, but try to visit them when I can.  I find it difficult to keep in contact with them as they are both non-verbal, but my parents keep me updated in between visits.

  • My oldest son is autistic and my middle son is going through the assessment process ... my youngest shows no autistic traits and I often wonder how he'll find life as he gets older ... he's not quite 3 and has lots of social interaction with other children at present but I do worry.

When my littlest was very small and we first realised his middle brother might be autistic as well, I admit that I hoped my smallest would be as well as I was so concerned how he'd be affected if not.

    Hope that helps,

    GG x

  • As mentioned on a previous thread, I was born low birth weight because my Mum had experienced a lot of stress and upheaval during her pregnancy. My brother was born at a normal 7 pounds one ounce, and he is far more adjusted than I am. Interestingly, I have never had speech difficulties, but my brother was referred to speech and language when he was little. He had difficulty pronouncing words. He has never been that social, but he has a girlfriend who he met at uni, and they are very close. My brother's obsession with trains was quite extreme, and he used to line his buses up in his 'bus station'. He was always reading the fine print of train manuals, and he knows everything, in great detail, about all the train franchises etc. So my brother is not autistic or aspergic because he is far too spontaneous and relaxed for these diagnoses. He is in fact 'neuro-typical', but I cannot help but notice some traits that come across as a bit autistic, in his behaviour lol.

I think the fact that I have full blown asperger's, is because my brain could not develop properly due to prenatal stress. This is just a theory, but stress in pregnancy has been linked to developmental problems when there is a genetic vulnerability

  • I am aspergic autistic and have a younger brother who is not on the spectrum, but shares some of the traits, which suggests there is some genetic element. My brother had a mild speech impediment wlhen he was a little boy, which lowered his self esteem and had  an effect upon his ability to make friends. My brother used to be very obsessed with trains. However, he currently has no phobias or anxieties to speak of, and he is very spontaneous. I am the complete opposite. Because of my AS, I need routine and ritual, and I have severe anxiety. But it is interesting to notice the similarities between my brother and I
