DLA question

Hi all, I'm new here and my son was recently diagnosed as autistic, though he is fairly high functioning, I have a question about DLA. It almost makes my skin crawl to ask, because I'm not after a cash cow, and I don't want to feel as though he's just been diagnosed and my first thought is kerching, but are all autistic kids entitled to this? Or do they have to be quite severe? And if you get it, what do you use it for? Extra trips, maybe to support groups? Specialist computer software maybe? As I say, I'm new to this, and I only bring it up because I saw a few threads when I was looking through the forum. Should I be applying for it?

  • Yes intenseWorld, I guess that makes sense. I think it's hard to understand what extra needs he has, unless I think about it. He needs more help eating, I can't leave him in social situations alone, like at parties or school discos, and he needs more attention around other kids as he can lash out if someone is in his personal space, or climbing a ladder on a slide, for example, at the same time as him (I had to stop him kicking a boy in the head the other day). So I guess these extra things may not necessarily be noticeable, and I do think as he gets older I may find more and more. I can't imagine I will be able to let him walk to high school alone, even though it's 2 years down the line. He is too vulnerable. So thanks, I will have a think. I'm just used to it I guess, so have never really thought about it.
