quick question

not sure how common it is but do any of the parents of children with ASD have it themselves? iiv read there is not much evidence that its genetic just wondered if it can be genetic

  • Hi again - I can't advise on whether you should request a diagnosis for yourself - that's a personal decision. It would be a good idea to check out the posts and info on this site.  There's loads of info and discussions about autism/genetics.  Also discussion about the pros/cons of getting a diagnosis as an adult.  I think it's a good thing that you understand your son so well.  Good luck with everything.Smile

  • thank you ! i seem to understand my son very well i can identify with how he feels and i am very understanding im just wondering if it is running in the family , my mum is also like my son , all 3 of us r quite alike in many ways eg sensory , noises make us angry and i completely get it when my son wont wear anything other than tracksuits i dont like wearing certain materials we r all very anxious people to there is so much more but i dont want to write a huge essay lol im just wondering when he gets diagnosed should i get assessed myself?  i did get assessed for ADHD but the psyc said i had no symptoms i dissagree im extreamly unorganised and have a low tolerence to stress always late and always lose somethingevery day , ocd, bad anxiety just feel like ifmy son gets his diagnosis it might open doors for me as to why i suffer these things just a though , i also have learning disabilities.

  • Hi - there are some posters here who are are parents and autistic.  Also as far as I know, there is definitely a genetic component involved.
