A diagnosis may help you to get an EHCP for your child, and extra resources for the school. But all schools should be able to support neurodivergent kids. Things like well-structured lessons, differentiated for students' needs should be normal. All classrooms should have things like phonetic dictionaries, left-handed rulers and other basic items as standard. All kids would benefit from the things that help ND students, like teaching in "chunks" with breaks, active learning, group work and multi-modal teaching.
Thank you, my child has an echp and I do feel like my child is neurodivergent so there’s isn’t really a question mark for me on that.
I am getting the impression from school that they require, or would atleast find a diagnosis helpful, but I’m not sure why that is.
My priority for my child is that they get to know my child as an individual and their individual needs, rather than a specific diagnosis but I am struggling to get a clear picture of what they can access now and what they can access post diagnosis.
Every LEA should publish a "local offer" on their education website - ask your SEND team for details. This may include specialist advice for schools.
Every school has a budget for SEND. Full details of relevant policies and provisions must be published on the school's website. Basically, the school must meet your child's from their SEND budget and top up with the EHCP funding, e.g. teaching assistant hours, speech and language therapy or whatever is specified.
If your child has an EHCP there should have been a thorough assessment of your child's needs, probably in the education psychologist's report. As you say, they need to know your child's individual needs. Are you familiar with SPELL ? Check out https://www.autism.org.uk/what-we-do/professional-development/the-spell-framework The school should be working with this framework in mind.
