Autism diagnosis - school support

Is a diagnosis of autism required for schools to be able to access relevant training/support for supporting children with SEN/possible autism/neurodivergence?

Parents
  • A diagnosis may help you to get an EHCP for your child, and extra resources for the school. But all schools should be able to support neurodivergent kids. Things like well-structured lessons, differentiated for students' needs should be normal. All classrooms should have things like phonetic dictionaries, left-handed rulers and other basic items as standard. All kids would benefit from the things that help ND students, like teaching in "chunks" with breaks, active learning, group work and multi-modal teaching.

  • Thank you, my child has an echp and I do feel like my child is neurodivergent so there’s isn’t really a question mark for me on that.

I am getting the impression from school that they require, or would atleast find a diagnosis helpful, but I’m not sure why that is.

My priority for my child is that they get to know my child as an individual and their individual needs, rather than a specific diagnosis but I am struggling to get a clear picture of what they can access now and what they can access post diagnosis.
