5 year old son recently diagnosed, where now! no one seems to help or advise

Good Morning All

My youngest son Jack who's just turned 5 has recently been diagnosed with Autism. Throughout the whole process his school hasn't been much support and even now that we've told them he's had his formal diagnosis they're still not very helpful on what they're going to do moving forward.

He has issues with every day life which we need to get him help with and address but even the doctors and hospital having followed up with any help.

Where do we turn now to get him the help required? Any advise gratefully received.

When your son was diagnosed, did your doctor ask you about special educational needs, or discuss an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)? An EHCP is like an agreement between you, your child's doctor and their school, which outlines what kind of extra assistance or care they may need and makes sure the school understands your sons's ASD - which it sounds like they don't at the moment?

I would recommend reading the section on the NAS site about EHC plans (http://www.autism.org.uk/about/in-education/extra-help-in-school/england/ehc-plans.aspx) and in general the section on autism and education - http://www.autism.org.uk/about/in-education.aspx

If you would like to speak to someone directly then please call the NAS Helpline on 0808 800 4104 (Mon-Thurs 10am-4pm, Fri 9am-3pm). I would also recommend calling the NAS Educational Rights Service, which you can read about here - http://www.autism.org.uk/services/helplines/education-rights/contact.aspx, as one of its main purposes is helping parents of children with ASD who don't feel they're getting the support they need from their school.
