Stabilisers for an older child’s bike

Hello all,

My 10 year old son really struggles with his gross motor skills. He used to love riding his bicycle with stabilisers, but he is now far too tall for his old bike and I have been unable to find stabilisers large enough for a bike of his size. Do any of you know where I could get some from or have any suggestions, please?

Thanks,

Maria

  • I love that idea, sadly his father is obsessed with getting him riding an oversized mountain bike (we are separated) and I need to get him as confident on 2 wheel as poss - his father does not acknowledge the ASD or any of the challenges it brings. Poor sausage (son, not ex).

  • Thank you, I bought some but they were not big enough for the wheels of his hybrid bike. We went round the park yesterday and they didn’t touch the floor. He was leaning to the right the whole time until they broke. I will keep hunting..

  • I had never even heard of this, it’s been a bit of a day and my head is frazzled but I will look to becoming a member in the morning- thank you so much!

  • Have you looked at large trikes? I hired one at Center Parcs when I was pregnant it was like a normal bike but with 2 wheels at the back

  • I’ve had a look and Amazon sell them for adult bikes. EBay also have them and most probably cheaper.

  • A hack space maybe? There are workshops where hobbyists pay to share a workshop and it’s tools. Maybe they could put you in touch with a hobbyist willing to make stabilisers for a larger bike.
