  • Hi, thanks for your advise. my daughter was referred to pedetration when we went for 2 year check up. then we referred to S/L therapist but we missed the appointment and did not bother to go back as we thought she will be alright now 2 weeks ago we went to see pedtration again as he got all the blod test result and report from my daughter teacher who was coming my home every week. Pedtration said to us your daughter have very high symptoms of ASD and will write to other professional to contact us and start doing diagnose properly which i am still waiting for that. i live in Leicester hamilton dont no if we have any special school in this area how i can find this. my daughter can learn easily if i show some thing visually. My daughter liking the toys most of the time is that normal.

  • I don't think a mainstream school could exclude her for lack of speech, as that would be discrimination and they all have to be inclusive.  However, perhaps it's a good idea to get your daughter assessed by a speech and language therapist, and any issues that identified could potentially mean a mainstream school might not be the best place for her.  You should aim to put your daughter in the school setting that is best for her obviously.  Has anyone previously said anything about your daughter being assessed, such as a health visitor, baby clinic, GP or anyone?

There are many autistic children who start off with speech delays but end up speaking perfectly normally.

  • Hi - does your daughter get speech therapy and/or other services to help her?  As she's diagnosed with autism, you should ask for a statement of educational needs so she can get help when she starts school.  Any Child Professionals you are in touch with should be able to help you with all this.  Babbling is a good sign.  My son didn't talk until he was 5 and then said a 6 word phrase.  He had a good speech therapist who helped him with pronunciation.  You can use pictures instead of words to help your daughter.  These can be in the form of a daily "timetable".  This will be helpful to her as you can point to a picture and show her what you are going to do next.  You can also say the word relating to the picture.  Take advice from the professionals involved with your child and/or go to your GP to make enquiries.  Also when she's getting a bit nearer school age, ask to have a look at mainstream primary schools and also special schools in your area.  My son went to autism-specific schools : small classes, high pupil to staffing ratio and staff who understood autism and how it affected him as a person.  Good luckSmile
