What now?

My 9 year old son has recently been diagnosed with autism. I have fought for 3 years for him to be seen. Now that we have had the diagnosis I feel as if they have just sent us on out way to navigate everything ourselves. I have looked online, which is how I came across this page. My son is struggling to come to terms with autism and what it means for him. I have tried explaining that he is still the same wonderful person he has always been but I feel that it would be beneficial to get help from organisations or even clubs where he could meet children and people that may understand him a little more. I am in the glasgow area. If anyone has any information or knows of anyone I can contact it would be a great help. Thankyou for taking the time to read.

  • My experience with my son in Secondary School is that it helps to some extent that school may take the diagnosis into consideration if we query something. It can help to get reasonable adjustments.

I can remember when we got the ASD diagnosis being surprised that my son was now discharged. However as he also has ADHD CAMHS have appointments to review medication. Depending on the doctor this has given him the opportunity to discuss problems he has had related to autism.

As a parent it can help making contact with other parents who understand. From my son's point of view meeting peers with autism depends on the individuals.

  • That's good that your son has that opportunity to discuss things if he needs to and feels able to. Do you have any suggestions on how to make contact with other parents. The only place I've found is here but I'm not sure how much contact people make yet. I've tried helplines to find stuff in my area but there's just nothing.
